How fast can you ACTUALLY do RN-BSN

Updated:   Published

I have seen a lot of confusion and conflict regarding WGU's RN-BSN.

Some say you can do it in 4-6 months; Others say the curriculum changed and now that is impossible.

What is the real answer here?

I realize its a "go at your own pace" environment and for this arguments sake the pace will be at "as fast as possible".

If I could knock out my BSN by October that would be amazing.

With the current crop of mentors who have been anti-acceleration, I doubt you'll be able to finish by October. Based on anecdotes, recent mentors have been slowing students the hell down with their paranoia and conservatism.

There is a lot of content and I hear they have caught on to people moving fast, which cuts their profits. I start April 1st with 40 credits to take. I'll be happy to just finish in a year!

Sounds like I am too late to the party.

Well looks like CRNA school will have to wait another year.

More experience I guess!

I did 50 CU in three months, but that was two years ago. I still do see people on the facebook group finishing in one term so it's not impossible, but Commuter is correct that mentors appear to be trying to slow people down - the classes themselves have no new restrictions, but it's hard to finish in that timeframe with that many units if you have a mentor that will only have you let one class open at once.

I started October 2015 with only 12 classes to take. I planned on being a One Term Wonder! ha! I didn't tell my mentor that information either. My mentor has deliberately slowed me down. My first class, Care of Older Adult took over 4 weeks to complete because she refused to open up the test even though I made a 92% on the pre-assessment. Next, she wouldn't open up my next class until it was scheduled. I honestly regret going to WGU. I wished like hell I would have went to UTA.

Can't you request another mentor?

I just started on March 1st, so not a whole lot of data to go on yet, but...

I was able to start the reading and preparing of tasks for some classes ahead of time once I completed orientation (about February 20) so by the time March 1 got here I had finished all tasks for my first course (biochemistry) and was ready to submit them. I have now passed all of those tasks successfully and finished biochemistry. I have also done well on two pre-assessments and my mentor has unlocked those objective assessments. I plan to take those two objective assessment this weekend once my webcam is delivered. In all likelihood, less than two weeks into my first term I will have completed three courses.

I know they won't all go that quickly, but so far my mentor has been impressed and supportive of my progress. I only requested she unlock one objective assessment but she saw my pre assessment results on second course and unlocked them both for me.

For the record, I am in the RN to MSN, and have the goal of completing 67 credits in 18 months. Will be happy if it takes less, and not the end of the world if it takes more.

I started March 1st too! But for RN-BSN and I didn't start prior to March 1st. I just submitted Task 3 in Biochem. I also finally received my webcam today so I was able to take (and pass!) my first class -- care of the older adult! 3 CU's down, 31 to go! I've stayed up until past 4am night/morning since the 1st, working on biochem. It's kind of addicting. I just want to finish everything ASAP! I'm getting sleep deprived along the way though. :(

I know there are still people cruising through classes over on the fb page, so it's mentor specific how fast they let you go.. My guess is a newer mentor is less likely to deviate from the plan - thankfully both my mentors were old timers with WGU. :)

Dang it, I have just my intake interview to go, 34 credits (31 if my biochem appeal works) and I was hoping to get through in one term, starting April 1. I guess 1.5 wouldn't be terrible. I just won't tell them that is my plan.

It depends on your mentor. I see a lot of complaints about people being slowed down. I had a slow mentor who had all kinds of rules no one else had, and got a new one that is much, much better. I had to really push to get a new one they initially denied my request. It seems the trend is to be more managed by the mentors.
