Basically, there are two government run nursing programs that I could take at no cost to me but I was wondering if it would be worth it. One is a LVN program in my state but it is 400 miles away from where I live now (they have housing units you stay in while in school). The other is a RN program that is in another state completely (My state:California State for this program: Virginia). Both offers are tempting considering the average private-run LVN program is about 30k here and with the CC having a load of applicants and as many prereqs as the RN most of the time (to bad I don't live in southern California where there are actually some affordable programs).
I probably won't end up doing either program because I have to many obligations at home, but I was just wondering if anybody else would do something like this if they had the chance to....

All things being equal, I would go to the school that would afford me the best chances of landing a job.
The LVN job market in California is in the pits for the most part. I have no idea if that is the case in Virginia.
Uprooting will be painful but could be worth if either school has a strong presence in their respective communities that may translate to better job options. LVN programs may not be glamorous but some do command respect within their local areas. For example, a community college LVN program that has been around for a few decades and has strong ties with the nearby hospitals and clinics will be more attractive to the nurse recruiter than the for-profit college that sprung up just a few months ago.
Either way, good luck in your path!

You must mean the Job Corps program for your LPN. Which program are you talking about for the RN program? I'm basically thinking about the same thing now: whether or not I should do the free LPN program through Job Corps or find some way to do an RN program because I don't think Job Corps pays for that (do they?). I personally wouldn't be scared at all of traveling if it's free. Anything that's free is good for me :) and I love traveling!!

As someone already resigned to taking out student loans, and in semi debt to parents/grandparents for 2 years worth of post highschool globe trotting, I WOULD MOVE TO THE MOON FOR A FREE EDUCATION!!

I would hitch a ride on the first thing smoking to the RN program :)! My lpn was free I had to move a little less than 100 miles away but im back home. I was worried about paying bills and I had to pay rent but all was taken care of because I had faith. I am now paying for my RN program on my own :)! GOOD LUCK!

I personally moved from Arizona to up sate New York to get my nursing degree. It's in the middle of nowhere, and it's MUCH colder than home... but MUCH less expensive, closest thing I could get to free education. For me it's worked out and I don't regret the move (after all i'm only here for 2 more years). But do what's best for you in your situation, If you want badly enough to get the degree, you'll do what you need to, but moving across the country or away from home isn't the worst thing in the world. school doesn't last forever. (thankfully!!) and you can always go back home after. hope this helps, good luck!!

Free RN program? Would crawl there if it meant getting what I want without having to pay for it. For that matter, the way it is today to be accepted, would crawl there if it meant getting accepted even if I had to pay for it. Getting into nursing programs in CA is not a walk in the park.
Yes, that's right, it is a jobcorp thing. I heard rumors that they had an RN so I went scouting on the net and found this:Blue Ridge Job Corps: Academics. My main disgression against going is my fiance, I would hate to see him get depressed and miss me while in the program. I probably couldn't hold much of a job in the program to afford plane tickets to go back and forth to visit him over the weekend. I wouldn't want to make him suffer. And I hear the job prospects in california are terrible for LVNs even though that would be the program of my choice. I would be so happy if they brought a program like this to the Bay Area, that's where they're really needed.

If this is truly the profession you want...2 years away to get your RN is a drop in the bucket over the course of a long term relationship. Think about folks in the military...they have to be apart often when they're deployed, yet the relationship still survives. If it's truly meant to be, then you can go pursue your dream. If your fiance isn't willing to stick it out, then you might need to reconsider whether it's a good relationship to begin with. True love lasts, no matter what the distance!
You've got a chance at a FREE nursing education. As you can see by the poll and most of the comments, most of us would JUMP at the chance of such an offer. So, think long & hard about what it is you really want.
Best of luck with your decisions :)
SopranoKris is right! I had a Bf of 2.5 years when I moved for my Lpn program. But needless to say before I moved we didn't see each other that much he was a truck driver. He had a hard time with my move even thought we saw each other the same amount of time. He resented that I would be making as much money and his and he swore I was planning on leaving him for a doctor. He left me right before 3 quarter finals. 3 weeks later I saw pictures of him on a cruise with someone else. If I never had moved I would never achieved my dream of becoming a nurse. I

If I get into nursing school here at UNM, I will pay close to nothing for my BSN. I have religiously saved each and every one of my scholarship refund checks. :)
EDIT: On topic, I would do it if it's free. If it was meant to be with your fiancee, then nothing can ruin that.

$30, 000 for LVN?! My associates degree RN only costs $14,200 plus books. In that case, I would travel high and far for free nursing education!!
