How would an employer view me?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

hello everyone out there is nursing land...............

i am brand new to this website and this is my first post..

i am 24 years old and a single mother of one. i have never held a job a day in my life because i was always a stay at home mom. my daughter started school last year and i took the opportunity to go back to school. i am currently enrolled in an lpn program with a tentative graduation date that is set for january, 2010. putting into the consideration the state of the economy i am so afraid that i will graduate, pass my boards and be unable to get a job at all because of not having any work experience at all... i guess my question to you guys is:

1. will this negatively affect me because i have no work experience whats-o-ever when applying for an lpn position?

2. i have volunteer experience but none of them has anythhing to do with the health field. should i still put these things on my resume? would it even help?

what would employers think if my resume is only half of page long?:crying2:

thanks in advance.....

Everybody has to start somewhere. You might put your volunteer work down just to show you have been out in the community. My sister never had a job in her life either when she graduated as a school teacher. She's working now, and all she had to put down was volunteer stuff. And my own work history was short before nursing school - a year in a factory and six months as a secretary and I've had plenty of jobs (25 years worth!!!).

Thank you so much for your reply. i truly appreciate it

It all depends on the area! I graduated July 1st, moved from Florida to New Mexico on August 1st, got my license on August 25th and started my new job on September 2nd. It can be done. One thing I would suggest is building a rapport with the nurses you do clinicals with, they can be a big help in getting that job!

Hey welcome to allnurses! :)

It's okay not to have experience when starting. Somebody has to start somewhere right? Employers consider not only experience but attitude and work ethic as well. So keep that in mind.

About your resume, half-a-page is too short. There is such a thing as a too short resume, it doesn't show much about you. List down the seminars you have attended (while in school, go to every single one you know). As well as what you did for extracurricular activities, awards you received, even your hobbies/interests so your employers can see your personality. ;)

Right now, just concentrate on school. Things may be different when you graduate.

Good Luck! :)

See if you can volunteer at your county health clinic. it could be a start to an opening at grad.. Good luck

You might want to quickly obtain a CNA certificate while in school and get some experience by working a shift here or a shift there. You can get on part time at either a long term care facility or with a home health agency and get just enough experience to have an employer name to put on your resume. If you are so inclined, you could sign on with two home health agencies and have two employers to put on your resume. Otherwise I would not worry too much about this because, as already said, everyone has to start somewhere.

i was a stay at home mom from the time i was 19 til i was 29, then i went back to nursing school when my youngest son went to kindergarten. it was the best thing in the world for me to have done. number one it help teach my children to be more independent, a thing they thank me for today now that they are 26 and 21. number 2 it gave me the self confidence to go out there and get a job that we were told basically wasn't out there. this was when there were a surplus of nurses and we were told we basically went to school to not get a job, this was told to us at our graduation by the ceo of the hospital we went to school in. it was hard to hear, made me angry and with in two months of graduation, i was working for his hopsital and another one as well. i had never worked for anyone else expect cleaning house to help put myself thru school.

you will be fine. you do a hard job already being a mother and single one at that. have faith in yourself, you will do fine and set a wonderful example for your child!

good luck in school and life!

i promise on my life you will be able to get employment in ltc, maybe not the choice site of your desires, but in many ways like pedi...... but it is a great place to start when you are running against walls and need some "time in grade" experience...... what are you doing in clinicals? if it is a site you would like to work in, hun kiss up, everyone loves hearing:clown: compliments, and then followed by is there something i could help you with, you will be remembered, especially if you are really blazen and ask them to remember you at graduation time :)
