How Do You Do It?

Published

I was just wondering if anyone cared to share their secrets for staying awake, staying energized, and/or staying focused, be it during marathon study sessions for finals (which I am in the midst of) or just the day-to-day stuff throughout the semester.

So what does it for you? An IV drip of Starbucks? Meditation breaks? Do tell!

coffee, monster, coffee......coffee....chocolate...

but not necessarily in that order!

Now this is what I do not saying it is the healthiest idea but it has helped me so far....we just snack and eat lots of candy , and drink pepsi.

I never did like coffee. I did hits of No Doz. When I smartened up I just did short naps of about a half hour and used alarm clocks to wake me up. It also helped to get up and move. A short jog or some short activity helps get the blood flowing as well.

Really, the smartest thing, as you will learn, is to have started preparing at the beginning of the term. so that by the time the final rolls around all you need to be doing is clarifying stuff that came up during a lecture or that was dropped on you during the review session by the instructor. Time and wisdom will teach you that.

I am a tea nut. I have boxes and boxes at my house, and will seriously drink about 4-5 cups per day.... Depending on how much studying has to be done. I feel that it helps!... :chuckle

When i was in boot camp i was standing watch every couple nights for two hours, splitting up my already extremely tired out body's sleep, and what i had to learn to do, without any kind of coffee or stimulant was to get my body pumped up somehow, whether doing a quick exercise or whatever, and it didn't always work. I was in class a lot and after the second week never even touched a desk...if i sat down i fell asleep. Then again, i had some buddys stand with me cause they were afraid i was going to topple over. :)

Now while i'm in school, i've kind of learned what my limits are and how to deal with them. I dont' drink caffeine, but i do like to keep a water bottle with my filled with either cranberry juice or flavored water just to give me something to concentrate on.

Another way i keep focus is switching topics every couple hours or every hour depending on how motivated i am. I find it hard to really study on the same subject i've been staring at for the last hour.

I'm definetly still trying to find the best trick out there, but these are some ways that have worked in the past for me.

I'm not a huge coffee drinker, but I do think that a well-placed coffee during a big study session (or any day when you need a lift) can be a help. By "well-placed" I mean a coffee that is consumed prior to your own "sleepy" time. I always find that after lunch I'm completely ready for a nap, so if I drink a coffee at about noon I can generally avoid that slump and keep studying productively.

I also like to use exercise as a study break...it effectively refreshes your mind but of course also really benefits your body.

Finally, why not make a little stack of "studying CDs" or an iTunes playlist of good study music? I find that certain music that I like can really improve my study sessions and just give a little relaxation at the same time.

the worst thing to do is buy the caffeine pills . . . talk about jittery, nauseated bliss! i am a complete procrastinator & NEVER learned an effective way to study. in the end- i finally realized that i would earn the grade on a test no matter how desperate my attempt to study. so~ my advice is to get SLEEP . . . especially for nursing classes based on theory w/ application type questions containing long synopses. it is better to be mentally awake & able to comprehend questions to think through them in a logical manner rather than having a mind full of memorized facts!
