Why would a nurse think that is a turn on for the patient Asking for Lidocaine jel si to stop some of the pain. It does hurt. How would you like if a nurse came in and did it to you and not even talked to you. I have never had a catheter in me. List year I had sepsis my white blood count was over 25.000. The doctor ask for a urine sample. I pee before I went to the hospital I told him I did not need to go and I don't pee on demand I was at a clinic for 6 hour 1 day could not give a sample been like that all my life. I'm 60 now. The 2 nurses can in never talk to me never told me anything asking many times. They told my son to leave the room. Took my pants off Only one leg was off and he forced it in. Let me tell you it hurt. After that I give up he force another one in and was pushing it in and out yelling do I have a prostate problem. When he pull that one out it had blood on it and I had blood on by gown. There was pain. I got copy's of my records nothing about the blood. I was alert and there was no reason to be treated like that.. All he had to do is ask the question your suppose to ask.. I never heard a kit open or my private area cleaned no jel 2 weeks later I went to the urologist that I saw in the hospital to see why the nurse could not catheter me. Found out I have a stricture just before the prostate with new scare tissue. He said I was lucky that the nurse did not do more damage. He told me that nurses are suppose to ask questions and talk you thro it. The other nurses I had the 6 days in the hospital were great All were very nice and always ask my name and checked my tags. That will never happen again. I carry papers with me at all times. I worked in a nursing home for 5 years back in the 80's. I would never have done that to a patent. Life goes on but I will never forget it. An I may not know his name But I do remember his face...Ken

I want to second all the recommendations for relaxing the patient. In addition, consider a side-lying approach (with a helper to hold the uppermost leg) - much easier to find the meatus as well as kinder to stiff or sore joints.

Hello all. I have not been on for awhile and I would just like to make a comment. As you know if you read some of my posts I had a very mad experience with a male nurse having a catheter force in to me without even talking to me but that is done and I am over it. Never will forget it but life goes on. Over the last eight month's I have been in and out of the hospital from heart problem gallbladder surgery A-fib attacks had 3 of them. Also had a repair done on my uro-lift and had emergency surgery for bleeding was passing blood clogs. I just what to say to all nurses. THANK YOU All were very kind to me every time I was in. The last was for the bladder spasm and had to be catheter and flushed out. The nurse was great she did he best to try to relax me. Did not use any gel this time but they gave me morphine for the pain. She listened to what I said. I am under a urologist and have a stricture in the urethra. I cannot have anything bigger then a 14fr coude catheter;. It took her 2 time to get it in the bladder. After 15 minute of flushing by hand I was still bleeding. Had emergency surgery. Turned out to be 3 blood clogs around the prostate The doctor burn the other 2 clods the surgery was 3 hours before I stopped bleeding He put in a 20 fr 3 way catheter had to be flush for 24 hours. 6000cc saline going through by bladder. Everyone in the hospital were great. All nurses work so hard and have to do a lot. There was only one time I was embarrassed The second day a nurse came into the room. I think she was a tech only 21 and very petty. She came in and had to wash my private area and to make sure that the catheter was clean of the blood all over. She told me and ask if it was ok. I say go ahead and she did The RN came in that was in charge of the floor and made sure she was doing it right. I worked in a nursing home for 5 years and took care of many people and when you seen one body you seen them all. It never faze me because I was doing something to help them out. The blood clogs were cause from my blood thinner. I am doing great now. You may not hear from for me for awhile But I just like to say you all have a special job and I am glad you are who you are...THANK YOU AGAIN FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART Ken

I have inserted many catheters at home and also in the hospital.

The best piece of advice I have ever gotten is to use the urojet liberally. In fact, a urologist once told me that he almost never has to use a coude because in male pat with known prostate issues he even uses 2 urojets. Having said that - it is a medication and if it is not included in your orderset you have to get an order for it. I worked on a floor once that called urologist frequently for difficult caths and so I decided to go with the urologist to see what he did differently. It is good to explain the urojet before, after squeezing it in it is best hold the member and close the urethra through a gentle squeeze so the lube does not just run out again. Wait few minutes. I have only used a coude very few times.

In home care we did not have a urojet. The manager wanted to institute a policy because there is a large amount of foley insertion. I do not think that they actually did it but not sure as I left and now in the hospital again.

For women : do not just poke around! You need to visualize !

Thank you for the reply. They do the urojets in the doctors office when I have a scope done. The first time in 2014 they use nothing and believe me it hurt. He never even told me what he was doing. That was when I did not know I had a stricture. The 3 times I had surgery my urologist put them in while I was asleep. The last time when I had the bladder spasm they gave me morphine and the nurse was very nice. The is good to know but it only help in the member not the prostate Thank you ken

Hello all. Have not been on in a while Been in the hospital. Had a Heart Ablation. 6 hour procedure. What I would like to know is. Ok I have a stricture just before the prostate and I have to have a coude 14 F catheter if I have to have one. When I told the nurse in the hospital she said we will have to find one. and another nurse asked what was it. Now this is a big hospital. In school do they not teach the nurse about different catheter type. I know regular catheter are all over the hospital I even told the nurses how to insert it the way my urologist told me. That the tip has to be up facing me so it will go through the prostate. Don't you think that a nurse should know be trained on how to put one of these in. There are many men with stricture and it would be easy and less pain full. I carry a copy of the report of my stricture and no one is allow to catheter me with my permission. I don't want any trouble with my stricture. Have a nice day and holiday Ken

Yes definitely uroject lidocaine jelly, if no counter-indication, and physician order
