How bad is a W

I am thinking about dropping a course, but would get a W. How bad does that look for graduate school applications? Does anyone know?

It looks better than an F. It really depends if you need the class or not.

I dropped and got a W. It didnt affect my GPA-and I withdrew with an A but had some personal stuff going on. I think a W isn't a big deal. Stuff happens, and at least you aren't getting an F in something. You may want ask your advisor what your school thinks of "W's" and also make sure you don't have a withdrawal limit.

one or 2 W's isn't that bad. Now if you had a whole slew of W's every semester, grad schools might begin to wonder what was going on. I think they also understand that life happens sometimes and sometimes you have to drop a course, its better to do that than take an F.

A few W's is no big deal. Its way better than a D or even a C.. or at least that what I was told by an Adcom at Northwestern

A "W" isn't that bad, HOWEVER if it is a nursing course or a co-req or pre-req it could change your eligability to continue in nursing. In my program if you drop a co-req you are out of the program!!! And if you drop a nursing course you are also out. I would talk to your academic advisor and make sure it will not screw up what you worked so hard for.

Good Luck!

Well its certainly better than a F or a D. A lot of times if you re-take the class though you can get the W dropped from your transcript if you file an academic reprieve (usually good for 1 semester or if classes are more than 10 yrs old).

If you need to drop it then do it, most people have W's on their transcripts. Its one thing if you have W's from every semester, its another thing if you have just a few.

I dropped a course once and knew the "W" would be reflected on my transcript, but the next quarter I picked up the course again and got an A. It was a wise thing for me to do as my family life was much too hectic that particular quarter (unforeseen things that occurred). If you feel you need to drop a class, drop it. It's much better to drop a course than fail a course. Sometimes the timing just isn't right. :)

Lgreen:

- A "W" on the transcript will not hurt you.

- Naturally, you do not want more than 2 or 3 of these on

your transcripts.

- If anyone asks --- probably no one will -- just tell them your

mom, kid, husband got hurt, sick, died (just pick one) and you

had personal obligations.

- Now here is the clincher. Talk with your school. If you re-take

a course with a "W", you may be able to have it removed from

the transcript. Every school is different.

- Also, can talk to teacher and get an "I" for incomplete. In

most cases, once you complete the work, the "I" gets

changed to the appropriate letter grade.

--------

- That being said: Like the above posts, you gotta watch your

nursing classes. See what the school's policy is.

- If you have to drop out of the program. Do it with dignity.

Talk with your advisor and the dean. Might be able to salvage

something, perhaps salvage a lot. Might even be able to re-

take classes the next year and not get hit with new tuition

charges. Also, they may drop courses off of transcript if you

do so.

- Again, it all depends on the school, the phase of the moon,

and of course the Dali Lama. :)

Good luck,
