I pretend to suddenly develop a hearing problem. Sorry, what did you say " What...what, can't hear you? Can you speak up? â€
Has to be done with a straight face!
I also mimic whatever they are doing. That depends on the Dr of course. Some idiots simply haven't got a sense of humor.
Psych consults are the best. They're intimidated by medical jargon and think medical nurses are crazy anyway, so you can get away with murder sometimes. Ask them a good cardiology or metabolic D/O question or autoimmune and watch them flounder. You don't even have to know the answer.
Ask them about hearing voices and pretend you've just heard one. Did you hear that ?"
Got to have fun sometimes!
What do others do?
I really do want my fellow female nurses to lighten up though. You male nurses need to prevent the stressors building up too much for the female nurses. We simply cannot look at the big picture and take a step back. It's killing us trying to be perfect all the time. It took me a long time and much research to change my outlook.
You are definitely a psych nurse!!! Well perceived!!!
Well then, since my sense has been confirmed, shall we take it to the next level?
I also sense that attention is the goal of this endeavor. One who seeks attention through questionable techniques does so due to a feeling of not being fulfilled. People use available techniques that they know work best, to get attention and get a fix of feeling momentarily fulfilled.
But it all comes down to bad attention is better than no attention...
Davey, I can't really say I have met an irritating Dr simply interesting with a problem. When irritation is met with curiosity re the pathology, curious results occur. The idea is to make them aware that you know they are being a piece of **** and it's only serving to reinforce their reputation for infamy, especially if displayed for all to see. Someone cannot make you feel bad about yourself, only you can do that for you. Self esteem!!

Oh. Sorry. I didn't realize giving others insight to themselves was your responsibility. I take everything back that I said.
You're right and I'm wrong. You're good and I'm bad.
Excuse me. I'm going to go eat some worms.
The thread is correct I have actually amused myself such. Not really interested in attention either. How about highlighting that with a few well chosen words, just how frustrated others are without actually knowing someone. You were the only one to figure it out. Nurses shouldn't be lashing out like that. There is so much fulfillment in helping others and I think that aspect is forgotten. We are nurses foremost. Consideration and understanding is what we do, right?
I'm totally a Crusty Old School Bat on this one Since there is no way I have time to plan and execute the strategies, I'll deploy the fake barf, a fly-in-the-icecube prank and a few others I am not at liberty to divulge at this time (remote control whoopie cushion).
You really don't need to involve patient care if all you want to do is enjoy seeing someone becoming angry or bewildered by your antics, and while also not having a single clue why you are behaving so strangely.
Irritating doctors are generally too self-absorbed to realize how their behavior affects others.
Davey, I respect your comments always, however if by now we're unable to distinguish when to and who to joke around with, then we are in the wrong profession. It's the reason this country is so polarized, because everything is taken so literally. You might know your MDs better. In my 19 months at my job I have become friends with one doctor in a menagerie of interns/residents/fellows. Even then our "friendship" was just small talk about tacos, pets, travel. Your posts are confusing - first we are supposed to annoy the irritating MDs, then we are supposed to joke with only the ones we know we can joke with. If I think I can joke with them, why would I go out of my way to irritate them? As another poster said, we're all on the same team.
"I get maybe three shifts a month, which I use for my sanity and to keep me grounded. Nothing does that better than working your ass of for 10 hours at something you can control."
As a full-timer I will tell you I do not enjoy going behind unprofessional staff who work a few shifts a month and wreak havoc on our already chaotic floor.
