How did you do in A&P?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I'm taking A&P 1 right now (just started 10 days ago) and it's HARD, but I'm busting my butt and I'm learning so much. I'm so engrossed in it and it is so interesting to me. I take A&P 2 next semester.

So, if you've already taken it, how did you do?

What concepts did you find the most difficult and what resources did you use to help you?

I read ahead and do the questions in each chapter, make flash cards, and study the book and my notes along with the interactive online quizzes that come with my book. I study 2-3 hours a day, and on days I have class it's about 3-4 hours. I'm spending extra time in lab next week and I'm in the process of making a study group. My first test is in 2 weeks over chemistry, integument, histology, and the directional terms and planes.

I just started this week. I got a voice recorder. I plan on recording lectures and playing them over on the rides to and from school. I find the book's online resources great (I started reading the chapters about 2 weeks before school started) I find that I prefer the flash card Web page that came with the book since my teacher pretty much sticks to it. I'm thinking of creating a study group as well because if I know the material well enough to teach /help others study I think I got it down. I have a really really good teacher and thankfully we don't have lab assignments outside of lab itself. Good luck to us!

I listen to my note cards as well. The best way to learn something is to teach it! I started typing outlines last week for all of my chapters. It's really helping. Good luck!!

Scored a 89.99 on my first quiz! YAY, wasn't that bad.

Great job!

I made a C in A&P1 and a B in A&P2. I'm over halfway done with my RN program and I'm not bursting into tears every day after class, so I can assure you that you'll survive even if you don't remember where every bone in the body is.

Thanks dc1994, I'm totally sure you will Ace that test due to your study habits, keep us updated! ?

Is it wrong to assume that nurses SHOULD remember where bones are in the body?! I tend to think that's probably important...

I think it is an unreasonable expectation, yes. Should we know where major bones are? Yes. Are we going to remember the names and locations of every bone in the body? Not unless you continuously review them throughout your career. It really depends on where you end up working, too. Are you going to remember the bones that make up one's skull if you're working pediatric oncology? Unlikely.

It's more important to know, for example, what to do when a patient starts to feel bone pain, what other implications it could have, what you're going to do for the patient in such a situation, etc. You can look up what the bones are called that make up the foot. It's a lot harder to look up what to do if your patient is crying out uncontrollably in pain radiating from the feet up to the leg, not to mention inconvenient when immediate action would be preferable.

I sure hope so! I've been studying my fanny off and I feel like I'm getting sick. Boooo! I'll post a comment when I find out my grade.

So, I've found out a couple things these past few days.

My school changed our entrance exam from the HESI to the TEAS. It was originally the TEAS, then they changed it to the HESI and left it that way for about a year, now it's the TEAS again. Hopefully they will make up their minds about which test they want us to take.

They're only calculating my GPA for entrance from this semester back. This makes sense though, because I apply in January for fall admission and the acceptance letters are sent out in March-April. There would be no way they could get the grades from the upcoming spring and summer semesters back in time to count that GPA for admission. If they did, they would only have about 2 weeks left to calculate everyone's GPA and send out letters.

My school is very rigorous. I talked to a girl today who is in her second semester of nursing school (BSN) and she got accepted with a 3.0. I currently have a 3.62 and have completed all of my core courses at our school. They give priority to those who have completed all their courses at the college.

My program is selective but not at the same time. There are technically no prerequisites except math 101 and sciences in high school. But they do want students to be done with A&P 2 before the nursing program begins but it's not mandatory. They take into consideration hs GPA, PAX RN entrance exam, and current college GPA. There are about 1500 applications for 150 but the advisor told me that some years they don't fill all the seats because they don't think applicants are strong enough. I think a 3.2 GPA and a 100 pax score is pretty much a guarantee so I'm shooting for a 3.5 and 125 pax score. I actually feel pretty confident about my chances of getting in.... Nursing school however fills me with certain dread lol

My first test is tomorrow night guys!

Wish me luck! I'm nervous!

as long as you have studied and put in time you will do fine. Don't rush your exam though.
