Houston RN pay?

Hi, y'all!

I'm planning to relocate to Houston or Conroe this coming year. Does anyone know how much money RNs generally make? Thanks! :D

So it sounds like with 14yr. experience, the most I'd get would be $36-38/hr. And only after 40hr/week would I get OT.

I would hate to take a pay cut from my current $40.27/hr but like you said, the cost of living is WAY cheaper down in Houston vs. Chicago. especially for the cost of Homes. I look on www.har.com regularly and I see beautiful 3000sq. ft.4bed. 2 bath homes for 180K.

But in Chicago 180K gets you a 2bed. 1 bath 1000sq. ft. home. + utilites are expensive in Chicago (especially gas, which is about $190/month). I don't even think Houston homes use gas. Don't Houston homes use only electric?

Let me be clear though, only at University of Illinois and maybe the other hospitals with Nurses that are in a Union (INA, Illinois Association of Nurses), does one get OT for ANY hours over 8hrs worked in a day, regardless of how many hours you work a week. I work only 32 hrs./week (4 8hr. shifts) and if I work over 8hrs. on ANY one of those shifts, it is OT. Pretty nice, eh?

I just bought a 2985 sq fthome in Copper Lakes (290 Hwy 6) for 180K. Salary around 30/hr for 3yr exp. I make around 42/hr here in California. But the cost of living is much cheaper in TX. Tax rate is around 2.8, which is ok for Houston. My current tax rate in California is around 1%. I am going to miss being unionized!:bluecry1:

okey heres what i got as well i was in houston jan. 15,16 for interviews with st. lukes medical center, memorial hermann sugar land and methodist sugar land. I have 6 years rn experience abroad and 3 years US, they considered 3 years credit for my overseas experience. Memorial hermann sugar land 32.50, methodist sugar land 30.70, st. lukes TMC 33.53 and this are all medsurg floor application. Methodist hired me right after interview but the offer was too low I asked them to give me more time and they told me i could shop around i have until today, monday to confirm with them. on the other hand, st. lukes told me to wait till today, monday for the confirmation which i would hope everything goes well st lukes also had the better night diff at 4.40. Of all the hospitals i visited i liked the methodist sugar land the most its brand new, very upscale look, nice environment with 1:4 nurse-pt ratio however i was not convinced with the pay but if st. lukes declines my aplication id be joining methodist sugar land.

Methodist is apparently a great hospital system to work for, and receives rave reviews from everyone. I do not work there, but many people that do are very happy there.

Also, if you come to the med center, take into acct that you must either park off site, or pay for parking. I dont think you need to do that in sugarland.

thanks meghan for the warm welcome. Guess what? changes changes hehehe st. lukes declined my application, methodist didn't call me back today for their offer and just when I was about to call off my plans for houston, memorial hermann called me for a job offer. im on my way to sugarland by mid feb. offer was perfect with $4 night differential no contracts involved.

The satellite Methodists either have or are planning small pediatric floors, however, they will likely be very low acuity med/surg units. Methodist Willowbrook currently has no pedi, however, it is in the midst of expanding to a 350+ bed tower and will have pedi in some form within 3 years. Methodist Sugarland just expanded; I'm not sure whether or not they have pedi yet. There's a new Methodist under construction near Katy. I doubt it will have much of a pedi unit if any at all as Texas Children's is building a satellite campus in the same area.

What methylene said, depends on the campus. I think Hermann charges $15 per month?? Can't be too sure but yeah, most campuses charge a nominal fee for parking. Most people are shuttled via a light rail train from remote parking, others are take a bus provided by the campus they work for.

I think you'll find the medical center here exciting and challenging. Best of luck to you. :up:

BTW, how's the pay in Florida??

Hermann is free if you do off site and ride the rail in if you're on days. If you're a nightshifter, it's free to park in the garage right by the hospital.

Critical care areas (i.e., L&D, ICU, ER, PACU) typically have a higher pay scale. These should easily fetch you high 20's even with just 3 years of experience.

As far as where to work goes......I never have cared much for HCA facilities. I typically get the lowest offers from those facilities when I have interviewed there. I think anyone with the opportunity should definitely experience the hospitals in the medical center. The atmosphere and drive in there is intoxicating.
