Has anyone heard of anyone getting a job in a hospital (not home health) without a residency program? This is all so frustrating.

Yeah but it would probably be only smaller hospitals that do that - hospitals that don’t have residency programs. I’m not from the Houston area so I’m not sure of smaller hospitals that hire new grads ? my suggestion is to search for Houston nurses groups on FB, request to join, then make a post explaining your situation. People are very helpful! That’s what I did before I got an offer from St. Luke’s and people would take my resume and give it to their directors

I'm currently a new grad that started working in the hospital already but without a residency. Typically they would have me in a residency class but I think I was the only new grad hired this time and then they cancelled the Summer residency. I have heard from other RNs on my unit that the residency classes weren't really that crucial. Mostly stuff like self-care, adapting to the job, etc. More general stuff. They said the orientation on the unit is the most important. My educators said if there is an October or Winter residency group that begins, I can take residency classes with them once a month.

You’re 100% right that the most crucial component is your orientation with a preceptor, which ALL hospitals do, not just ones with residencies. So for those of you still looking for a job, I would not hesitate to reach out to other not so well known hospitals! You could get lucky!

I agree! Times are tough, and as long as they put thought into your individual training, that's what's most important. I was originally concerned to be starting work without residency classes as well, but my educators, managers, unit, and preceptor have put so much into an individualized training process for me, and it's been amazing.

So I would suggest those job hunting to explore all options as well, especially if it's related to your field of interest.

Yes! I knew whatever God’s plan for me would happen and was fortunate to get a direct hire position. I was worried about not doing a residency as well but I also have an individualized orientation plan. Keep applying. Apply every where!!

And what hospital gave you direct hire if you don’t mind me asking?

I will be more than happy to share as soon as the ink dries for me..I signed my offer letter just last Thursday. I am awaiting my background check which should be complete by the end of this week. I will even ask the nursing recruiter if I can share her information.

Has anyone on this thread applied/interviewed with Baylor Scott and White College Station location?

I think signing an offer letter already seals it, but gotcha. Thank you will be waiting.

Typically you get an offer you have to sign to accept the job but it doesn’t seal the deal until you sign the contract they give you after accepting the offer

I did back in July for the fall start date. Apparently they only hired 4 new grads this last go round. September 1 is when the next application cycle opens for them.
