Houston Community College ADN applicants for fall 2015?

Published

Hello,

Just wanted to know if anyone is applying this April to get in for fall 2015 ADN program at HCC?

Also, I have completed all of the required prerequisites and I am taking all of the recommended classes this Spring. Do I still have a chance of getting accepted even though the recommended classes are still in progress?

I plan on registering for the HESI as soon as HCC updates the test dates and I am hoping to get a date in February.

Any info is helpful :)

Hey Guys!

I am currently in the nursing program at HCCs. I see many of you don't know the good news for most of you who will hopefully become Nursing students this fall. My instructed informed our class that this fall there will be some dramatic changes going on in the program.

1) The reason why the admission date has been change from April to June1st is bc they will be no longer need for students to take Pharmacology prior to admission. Now some students will be getting a "Conditional letter of acceptance" ONLY if they are candidates for the program. If they pass all of the medical & criminal requirements then they will be accepted to the Fall.

2) Now pharmacology will be added into the nursing degree plan. Its no longer a trial class.

3) Remember I told u guys there was good news..well the good news is that starting this Fall the Nursing degree plan will be eliminating some courses. (e.g. Health Assessment will be combine with Foundation) The Board of Nursing has decreased the # of Nursing credits for the ADN program.

4) Most people in my class have either an Associates or a bachelor's degree...and the 3 ppl in my class that don't have a degree had all of their prerequisites done by the time they submitted their application...don't get discouraged if you don't have neither...Always try, it doesn't hurt & always hope for the best!!! Also if you don't get in this Fall apply for the Spring semester (some ppl in my class didn't get in until their second try)

5) the reason why I mentioned #4 is bc HCCs is being very picky about the students they are accepting this year and they are not admitting a lot of ppl(the max they admitted this Spring semester was 60..but a lot of ppl didn't have all of the other requirements done (e.g. shot records) before the 1st day of Clinical, So the 2015 Spring class went from 60 to 44 students by February)...the reason why they used to admit 100+ students was because there was another person in charge. Another reason why they are being very selective is because they are in probation due to the # of students that didn't pass their Boards Last year so they are trying to improve their score.

ok guys, I'm sorry if this was a lot of information but I hope it helps! If you have any questions let me know and I will be more than happy to Answer them....GOOD LUCK & DON'T GIVE UP FUTURE NURSES!!! :)

@mrsQ thank you so much for this very informative and insightful post. There were things I was wondering about as far as the changes like deadline and pre reqs but now it makes sense. I'm a little worried about the Low NCLEX scores and really hope that improves. I really like HCC and have been attending the school for my pre reqs. How are you liking the program? Any tips? What were your acceptance stats? Lol sorry if that was too many questions. I'm just anxious to start nursing school and want to get as much info as possible :)

@forshia are you applying to HCC 's program?

@RALFRN14

You are welcome, I'm sorth if my post wasn't as clear but I was on my way to clinical when I saw this blog. Don't worry I was the same way when before I started nursing school...

Now, to answer your questions :)

1) How am I liking the program? Well, it's SUPER fast paced! Everybody's street levels are up the roof! I don't want to scare u off but they want the best of you bc they want to raise those scores... So they are pushing us super hard!!! Some ppl even dropped during the first month bc they weren't able to handle the stress level that we are on 24/7! We have 1 Exam every month at the end (50questions computerized exam and u can't go back after you have answered a question it only let's u go foward) but u are going to need those 3 weeks prior to ur exam to study, the teacher don't really lecture they give you case studies during class and they don't really tell u or give u an idea of that is on the test..no more tv or social media if u want to pass with a B ( Also our grading scale is different..75> is passing...

2) I started this Spring but they told us that they are going to be doing everything different with us and with those coming after us bc of what's been going on...they told us that there will be no more 100+student being accepted into the program any longer...Now they only want the top of the top and that doesn't only include ur GPA but also volunteer hours, degree, experience and other stuff... So if you have a 3.0 but u already have an associate's/ bachelor's degree and have volunteer hrs./ experience then u don't have to be too scare cuz you are already consider a competative student..but don't just stop there. If you are a student who doesn't have any experience or volunteer hrs or a degree try to have a high GPA 3.5> ...bc anything less with no medical background doesn't make you as competitive as those that do have them, specially now that they are not giving out pharmacology as a trial class...

Don't be discouraged with anything that happens...try your best and work hard for what you want! :)

@mrsQ well that definitely does scare me a little! lol. But I'll still be applying. I do have a previous BA, have been working as a medical asst for 5 years, and have all my prereqs finished, so I'm hoping that helps as well. No matter what I know nursing school is going to be a challenge and after the hard work I've put in, I'm ready to accept the challenge! Thank so much for your post and answer my questions as well!

@KALFRN14

I'm sorry that wasn't my intention. Don't be scared, you sound like a really good candidate...If you get into the program; which I'm sure u wil, read the PowerPoints they give you and use that as a framework to add extra information to study...Don't read the whole book bc if you do, you are never going to finish reading those ch. before any of ur exams. I'm telling you this bc it works 100% and my professor is the one who told us to study that way...it really works. I wish you the best! Good luck!!! :)

Hey guys ! I have Bachelor of Science. I completed all my prerequites for ADN and BSN programs. My question is HCC wants A&P1 and 2 to be less than 5 years old. My A&P 1, i took 7 years ago and i just recently took A&P 2, Human Growth/Development/Statistics/Microbiology last semester at HCC. My biology 1 is also about 8 years old from HCC. My english comp is also 8 years old. Since I have a Bachelor is Science. Do y'all think i will be an exception.

Also, will they calculated GPA on the required courses or my cumalative class i have taken. It's over 180hrs. I hope they only calculate what they need.

-Thanks In Advance.

Do you know if they will calculate your cumulative GPA using your BA degree or will they only select the courses they require?

They will calculate your BS degree gpa and your HCC gpa and gpa from any other school attended. That has to average over a 3.0. They don't just count classes needed, which is what I thought. I'm now having to wait til the end of this semester to submit my application because my cumulative is 2.8 and I need A's in my current classes to fulfill the 3.0 gpa cumulative requirement. If you A&P and its passed five years they will probably make you take it again. If it was apart of your BS I would call and ask if it can be accepted.

Hey guys!

If ur A&P class is older than 5 years by the starting of the semester u are planning of applying for, then u need to retake it. Even if you have a BA, ur science class needs to be 5years or less for the Nursing program(for any school). I'm sorry but there's no exception to this rule. They are requiring for you to have A&P done prior to admission so you need to take a short semester (make sure the ending day for that class if before the dateline) and retake this class so you can be eligible for the Fall. The only way this rule can be ignore is if you are applying for this Fall semester but ur A&P 1 course doesn't hit the 5 year limit until Spring 2016...then your A&P 1 still counts and u don't need to retake it, not even while you are in the program.

The only classes you don't need to re-do are all of the other class like English, History, Govt., etc... This rule only applies to Science courses even if you have already a degree....

Your GPA is Cumulative...Meaning all the classes you have taken since day 1 of college (prerequisites or not)

*Let me know if you have any more questions*
