What are the normal hours one works in the hospital for a 12 hours shift. I know days, evening, nights, but I am curious as to the exact shift hours.

Typically, the shifts are from 7am to 7pm, and 7pm to 7am.

Our shifts are 6p to 6a & 6a to 6p. We work 3, off 2, work 2, off 3.

Do either of you have children...how do you manage school schedules etc. I don't think I would like the 3 on 2 off, 2 on 3 off. I think I would like it better 3 on 4 off lol.

Coolpeach, my babies are grown now. :balloons:

When they were younger, I worked 11p to 7a and had a high-school girl stay with them at noc.

I don't work 12 hour shifts, Coolpeach. I have Monday through Friday off, them work two 16 hour double shifts on Saturday and Sunday from 6am to 10pm.

The two days on sounds really good, but 16 hours seems like a really LONG shift. Do you find it gets easier.

It is easier for me to deal with having to show up to work only 2 days per week, even if those shifts are long and drawn-out. Having 5 days off in a row is a definite benefit for me.

At my facility we work 7p-7a or 7a-7p...and you can pretty much self schedule as long as the numbers are evened out. My floor is also the only floor in the hospital where there's a waiting list to come to night shift. Go figure.

vamedic4;)

also depends on what specialty you go into. i work icu, but sign up to work extra in the er and they have 7a-7p, 9a-9p, 11a-11p, 3p-3a, 7p-7a, and 11p-11a shift.

My hospital is "officially" 7-7, but report actually starts at 630. I think they do this so we get in our full 12 hours after the lunch break.

I am still a little confused. I understand the 7a-7p, and 7p-7a (my old hospital did that) but I am applying to hospitals here in California now and they list the hours in shifts--1st, 2nd, and 3rd.

What would that make those hours? Is 1st and 3rd what I am used to and 2nd just like 12p-12a? Seems like it would be, but I am just not sure! Is this what the original poster was asking also? Sorry if not!!!
