What are the normal hours one works in the hospital for a 12 hours shift. I know days, evening, nights, but I am curious as to the exact shift hours.
I am still a little confused. I understand the 7a-7p, and 7p-7a (my old hospital did that) but I am applying to hospitals here in California now and they list the hours in shifts--1st, 2nd, and 3rd.What would that make those hours? Is 1st and 3rd what I am used to and 2nd just like 12p-12a? Seems like it would be, but I am just not sure! Is this what the original poster was asking also? Sorry if not!!!
Usually when they are talking 3 shifts they mean 8 hour shifts. 1st is usually 7am-3pm (aka mornings), 2nd is usually 3pm-11pm (aka evenings), 3rd is usually 11pm-7 am (aka nights). Then a lot of places will have you come in 30 minutes earlier to make up for a 30 minute lunch. So instead of coming in at 7 am you would come in at 6:30. These times change as some places will start at 6 am instead of 7 am. But that's the general idea of the 3 shift rotation.
If they are advertising the 3 shifts as 12 hour shifts then I'm not sure. Usually 12 hour shifts are broken down into day shift (usually 7 am to 7 pm) and nights (usually 7 pm to 7 am)

We do 12 hour shifts - 7a-7p, 7p-7a with self scheduling. We all pretty much get whatever schedule we have requested.
