I just wanted to ask. Ive been watching Grey's Anatomy, Mercy, and Hawthorne and I want to know: Just how real is it that there are romances at work that often? Do employees hang at local bar's?(LOL) Do you become roomates? Please be brutally honest because I have younger girls in my class daydreaming about the chance of romance and roomates at work and i want them to read the posts to get the ideas out of their heads and get a real idea of what being a nurse will entail. Thanks again.:loveya:

Well, I did meet my husband at work, and we are roommates now
Also, did have a couple of nurses where we work a couple of years ago that were roommates. They worked the same schedule so they could carpool. Always saw them together.
Other then that, a group of us my get together for margiritas at the local mexican rest. once a month or so. Small hospital, and we are fairly tight knit bunch.
Ok so there is some truth, but these girls think that every hospital will have a Mc. Dreamy. And if so, it doesnt mean he'll want them ya know. I think it's nice u met your hubby there. At least they arent completely ridiculous. Thanks jessiern. What state are u from?

OK....yes there have been several "office romances", we work long hours and we spend a lot of time together, so it seems natural that people would eventually hook up. However, we do not have any Mcdreamys and we aren't making out in the linen closet.

I work at a teaching hospital and the young interns and residents all look like Dugie Howser to me; very young . . . but I'm 58, married and very boring to my younger female colleagues. But, I do see the young, single, 20-something RN's looking the attractive McDreamy type intern/residents, up and down. And, one time, one of the young doc's-in-training did ask me, if one of my female colleagues was "seeing anyone". Hey, nothing surprising about it, just raging hormones!!
But, so far as I know, (my wife tells me I'm pretty dense about these things), there aren't any flaming romances between staff.

My rule? You don't "fish" in the company pond. 90% of the time it ends badly. 5% it ends terribly. A very small percent go on to long term monogamous relationships. And I say that as someone who found out the guy I was dating in another department was married when I went to his cube to ask where we were going for lunch and found his wife sitting in it. I was 28, and I learned. Never, ever again at work.
You break up, you still have to see the person every single day. And everybody knows you were played for a fool if they were married or just using you to get back at someone else.
We had a security guard who got fired after he was caught doing the wild thing with a CNA in the staff breakroom. He lost his job, and she end up being the laughing stock of the hospital, to the point where she finally left. Don't be them.

Hate to rain on the parade, but those shows do not reflect real nursing. In today's facespacetwitter world, I just want to keep my work and my personal life apart... I guess I am the minority.

We had a guy in my department at work who was notoriously known for sleeping around with women throughout the hospital. He ended up getting married to a tech in our department. The guy ended up having an affair with a nurse in the same department. The guy and nurse got married. The tech married another guy in our department.
Workplace romances occur regardless where you work.
I think it's a pretty bad idea to date people at work. If you plan to do it, make sure they work in a different area of the hospital. If things go sour, you won't have to deal with them so much.

Even if I was inclined to cheat on my wife I don't have the time. And if I did have the time it wouldn't be with anyone where I work. At the last place I worked before nursing school there was a 24 hour a day soap opera. I saw a lot of normally intelligent people do abnormally stupid things that were soon the main topic of lunchtime conversations. Out of a couple of dozen affairs I saw over the years exactly one resulted in a relationship that is still going.
The risks outweigh the benefits.

Agreed. Those shows are soaps, nothing more . . . and nurses are nonexistent in them; that's cuz the docs do everything, start IV's, hang piggybacks, give meds, ambulate patients, do CT scans, do MRI's . . . dang, they're amazing!!
