Hospital demotes LPN's to CNA's

Nurses LPN/LVN

A local hospital in my area changed their name 2 years ago. Since that happened, the hospital never replaced any LPN's who left with an LPN. They were replaced with CNA's. Now the hospital told their staff of LPNs they are now CNAs. I find this to be crazy! I work in LTC and do everything. I have worked in this hospital before it changed companies and they utilized the LPN for their scope of practice. These decisions hurt staffing and pt care. The RN has more to do, the LPN now who is skilled to do more is considered at aide level, does not make sense to me.

The LPNs have always had the option to get an RN license. They chose not to do so. This scenario happens elsewhere, although in most places, the LPNs are given a deadline to obtain an RN license prior to demotion or termination of employment.

R.N.s also have an option to go back to school to be APRNs- so let's phase all the r.n.s out for APRNs. That sounds fair!!!!!!!!!

This is insane. Just because you're not not in the same position, you lack mercy on others. And, I might add, just because R.N.s have a wider scope, doesn't mean anything. I've taught many R.N.s a lot- some things that even a cna would know . . . . . .

Their deadline to be an RN is 6 months. There was no fairness with change. Either they get 6 dollar paycut to be NA or find a new job. If they want to be an RN, they still get a paycut staying at NA rate. Tuition reimbursement is 1500. Now school is much more than that. On top of that your pay is decreases while you are trying to better yourself?? The hospital was only thinking of money. Many nurses will be displaced. I hope they get unemployment, them go to RN school. Some of those nurses will be retiring in 3 yrs. They have bills to pay. Its very sad.

Specializes in pediatrics.

I feel bad for those lpn's. I would do the unemployment and find another job. Apparently in that state they most be trying to go magnet and changing there scope of practice. It sounds like they just want to lay them off but don't want to be hit with sometype of lawsuit. I suggest for all the lpn's to get ur ducks in a row and all call the same day and say: being that my services are no longer needed will not be returning. It hurts patient care but it's hurting patient care now with putting the burden on the RN anyway.

Are you referring to me since you quoted my post? How do you know what I lack or do not lack based upon my stating of the facts? A little presumptuous are we? Please don't call other members names or attribute negative attributes when you do not know them.

Caliotter, do you agree that it was justifiable for the LPNs to get demoted? What about doing the same thing to RNs who do not have their BSN? I think that is a very real possiblity where I live at one local hospital. The buzz is already there that it could happen in the next year. Is this trend part of a plan to lower or stifle Nurses pay? With the high cost of education,(getting higher every year) versus the lack of incentive paywise this does not bode well.
