I am absolutely horrible in Algebra. It drives me nuts when others say that they have trouble as well, but end up with a A or B. For me, I really do have problems. Will this hurt me when it comes to chemistry and even nursing later on down the road? I worry about this all the time! Most schools you have to take one semester of Algebra and your done. However, with the CC that I am attending, they recently broke the semester up in to 7.5 weeks. So if a person would fail, they would only have to repeat 7.5 weeks instead of the whole semester. The school has 5 Algebra Core math classes all at 7.5 weeks. Depending on what your majoring in depends on how many of those classes you need. When it comes to nursing, you only need 3 out of 5 classes. This semester I will be taking my last 7.5 week class. Core math l I was able to get a B (it was really basic algebra), Core Math ll I got a C. It jumped from easy to hard literally overnight. After a few weeks in, I was just praying for a C. In a few weeks I will be starting Math Core lll and I will be done with Algebra. Again, I am just hoping for a C because I just do not get it. I also have a tutor and I still have a hard time catching on.

I feel your pain! I jumped through so many hoops trying to get into my cc nursing program avoiding math at all costs....and it basically cost me entrance into the program
My cc has you take pre-req's (check) take HESI (check) then gain admittance into pharmacology as the last step....catch is, is that you must pass the course including a timed math dosage calculation test with 90% or above. If you fail then you do not get in the program. This is the deal breaker for most of the students. I was in Pharm during summer and at the time had 3 vacations all that fell the weekends prior to test so I did not study as much as I sould have and combine that with weak math skills....I did not pass. I thought I could re-take pharm the following semester but I was informed that I needed to wait out 1 year! Now, come to find out in that year they have change the requirements for math, now another math course is needed prior to applying which I have not taken.
For me, Math has always been a needle in my side. I only have a few courses left to complete my AA (I should get an AS since I have so much science but I do not want to take the extra math) I have a 3.5gpa but college algebra will be my last course I take since it will probably take me a few tries to pass.
I am truly going to try and focus on learning math to get over these hurdles....my sciences start expiring next year so I dont have much time.

I feel your pain - Algebra is EVIL! I recommend a website called yourteacher.com I used it for a lot of my college algebra class. My daughter is using it right now in her HS Algebra 1 and she is scoring in the high 80s and 90s. It has been a phenomenal help for her. The site costs about 30 a month and it's definitely worth it.
The site has videos, tests, notes, and help split into specific courses such as Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and accuplacer prep.

I could barely pass Algebra, but passed my pharm test the first time with a 93 and the Net test the first time. Some of my friends passed algebra with A's and had to take pharm class and NET test twice, so no, it does not mean you will 100% crash and burn just because of that.

I understand your pain, i'm horrible at math. I took Algebra 1 and got a B, and took Algebra 2 in the summer and got a B. I'm beyond scared to take chemistry and stats. Does chemistry require alot of math?
Sand_dollar - Thanks for the web-site I will definitly check it out. I will not allow Algebra to keep me from reaching my goal!

I tutor students in Algebra up to precalculus. There are many great sites to help tutor you with Algebra.

Sparks Notes is also a good resource. You can also find math videos on www.metcalf.com . Be careful with this site because it also has explicit videos too. It is kind of like youtube.
You may not have as much of a problem as you think with your chemistry or nursing classes that deal with algebra concepts because of how the material is presented. A lot of times these teachers can present things in a more concrete manner that makes more sense than the abstract algebra concepts.
You are always welcome to ask me questions anytime too.

I agree with the OP about yourteacher.com. But I access it through youtube for free and although it's not the same access as paid each video is complete and it gives me all the information I need. I'm in Intermediate Algebra right now and thankfully have a WONDERFUL professor! Another great website for help is Purple Math.
