Hopkins vs. UMD

Published

Can anyone here give some insight on the differences between the two programs? If you had to decide between the two schools which would you choose...granted JHU is twice as expensive! Is it worth it? And how much can they really help you financially? Are there any major differences between the two schools in terms of education, personal attention, outside opportunities, clinicals, job search??? I would greatly appreciate any input!

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the great info on loans, etc. I was told that the financial aid packages will be mailed by the end of this week, so lets keep our fingers crossed that they SHOW US THE MONEY. :)

Also, if anyone hears about the JHUSON Merit Scholarships, would they post a message? I keep jumping everytime the phone rings. It's driving my cat crazy.

I am driving down to Maryland this weekend to visit the hubby, he is working there and I am stuck in Rochester, NY. (VERY COLD)

One quick, perhaps silly, question: What are you guys planning to wear to the Accepted Students Day? Casual, jeans and sweater, a little more business-like perhaps??? I can't decide.

Cherish: If I were 20 years younger, I'd jump on the Army nurse thing, but after 20 years in the military I think I'm ready for something new. Good luck to you and I hope things go well. By the way, the CG does deploy, but usually not to war zones. I spent a lot of time in the Berring Sea. Watching those videos of the medical people taking care of the troops, though, does make you want to jump in and help. (No matter what the politics, if you know what I mean) There are CG people over there, I think there are 3 or 4 110ft patrol boats and some port sevurity units. The CG uses Public Health Service Doctors and corpsmen, no nurses. Also, what is "OIF?" Just curious.

Have a great weekend!

I don't know if they will call you about the merit scholarships, I thought they would just mail it out to you. I'm in California, so you'll probably hear before I do, but I'll post when I do hear.

I'm planning to go casual to Accepted Students Day. BTW, Johns Hopkins is having an online moderated chat session today for all their accepted students

Thursday, March 17th 3pm to 5pm ET (Happy St. Patrick's Day!) I think it will help answer a lot of questions we may have. You can ask about the merit scholarships! See you online at the chat today! ;-D

LOL all military terms for...we're bombing the hell outta ya! (Sike)

Just terms for not saying war....plus everytime they change the name of an OPERATION. It means they can extend stop losses AND get more presidential executive orders for MORE money to the SAME war and MORE PEOPLE to the SAME war (even though its not a war, just a conflict!)

Hi Jennifer,

A friend of mine got into both UMB and Hopkins. She chose Hopkins, because she felt the faculty and staff were geniune. She has a disability and they have been doing everything they can to accomodate her. So far her clinical experience has been great. Her classmates are awesome. She just didn't feel as comfortable with the staff at UMB. Financially, she does have to come out of pocket (even with aid), but she feels it's worth it. Hope that helps a little..

I also was looking at Hopkins and was so impressed. Rather than totally go on GPA and standardized tests, they truly look at the ethics and the leadership qualities of the applicants. If only more places were like that!

Has anyone done the RN to MSN program at the University of Maryland? If so, were you able to still work while going to school? The program seems very heavy each semester?

Did anyone go online today for the chat? I wasn't near a computer at that time today. Anything interesting? Any news on the scholarships?

It was great! Lots of questions and people from JHU to answer them. The scholarships have not gone out yet. Some of the students on the chat formed a yahoogroup for accepted students for JHU's accelerated class starting June 2005. If you would like to join, go to:

That's pretty funny, but be careful over there! When are you leaving?

Casual sounds good to me. California, huh? I moved out here from Coos Bay, OR, my last assignment in the Coast Guard. I'm sorry I missed the chat, but maybe I'll check out the Yahoo chat for accepted students, even though I'm in the traditional program. Think they'd mind?

Anyway, have a good flight, I'm looking forwad to meeting you.

I'm sorry i missed it as well. Anything important you can pass along?

I will also be in the traditional BSN program, so i hope to meet you!

I also think i'm gonna go with casual. Not jeans, but not business attire either.

I don't have any news! I wish it was Sept already, terrible to wish time away like that. I think the Financial Aid Packages will be mailed out today, at least I hope so. I checked out the yahoo chat for Accelerated students, interesting, but no "hard" news. I'm looking forward to meeting you as well. My husband and I are going to spend the weekend looking at different areas to live, and I'd like to take the MARC into Baltimore, just to see how that is.

No jeans? I think I have to go shopping. :)

Hi there,

You can certainly join the yahoo group for Johns Hopkins Univ accepted BSN Nursing students for the accelerated class. Just know that most of the group is going back for accepted students day on April 1st and all our concerns are for the June 2nd Orientation and June 6th start date! It's a free form group that was just started as a result of the web chat yesterday!

Yahoo group: http://Groups.yahoo.com/group/jhuson_accel2005

We will probably talk about housing (major concern), classes, insurance, moving, etc.
