Can anyone here give some insight on the differences between the two programs? If you had to decide between the two schools which would you choose...granted JHU is twice as expensive! Is it worth it? And how much can they really help you financially? Are there any major differences between the two schools in terms of education, personal attention, outside opportunities, clinicals, job search??? I would greatly appreciate any input!
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that I received my acceptance letter today from the University of Maryland for the traditional BSN program. I think I've already decided on JHU, but gosh the difference in the tuition....
Anyway, I also received the letter inviting us for the Accepted Students Day, and you can really see a difference between the 2 schools as far as helping students and treating students well.
See you all on the 1st
PS Do you guys read the other posts fon this site from nurses already in the field?? Does it scare you too?
Thanks for the update!
I am personally also set on JHU and will definitely go there if i get a scholarship. If i don't get a scholarship, i will need to give it some more thought, but i definitely get the feeling that JHU wants us...which is nice!
I won't hear from MD until the summer when my spring grades are in...so now i'm just waiting to hear from JHU re scholarships!

Hi y'all! I actually just called Hopkins to ask them about the merit scholarships and they told me that they were just going to call me because i got one!!! yay!!!!! i am soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo excited! i am definitely going there! i felt bad calling, but its my birthday so i figured i'd try!!!!
please let me know if you hear!

That's great news, Im so happy for you.
Now, I will wait for my phone to ring, but even if it dosen't, I'm going to Hopkins! I figured out that the diff in tuition for out of-state resident at UMD and JHU is only like 12,000.00 for the two years. A drop in the bucket compared to the big bucks we'll be making. lol
Anyway, I have to go to psych class, but I'll keep my cell phone on vibrate...I'm sure the prof will understand.
Also, I called about registration, and was told that they pretty much set your schedule for you and that we will get it at orientation Sept1...seems like a long time to wait. I want to know now!!
Again, that's great news and on your birthday too.
By the way, was this the merit scholarship?
Thanks! I hope your phone rings!!!!! Yes, it was the merit scholarship.
I can't wait to hear from you!
As for our schedule, do we have any say in the matter? I have 2 boys and would rather be in school in the mornings and be home as early as possible. do you think they are understanding of such situations?
Thanks!

Hi everyone!
Wow, this has been a fountain of info for me!
CONGRATS to all of those starting the accelerated or traditional
program!! :balloons:
I just had a couple questions if no one would mind answering them:
1. What GPA's did you guys have going in? GRE scores?
2. For those who are already in or have completed the accelerated program, can you please give me some insight into how difficult it is/was? Did you find you could achieve above a 3.0 without a nervous breakdown ( )
3. This might be a VERY stupid question, because I know they accept out-of-state applicants, but does it matter what state you come from? Are they south-friendly?(I'm from Louisiana)
4. Does anyone know if they look at only your overall GPA or your pre-reqs and last 60 hours as well? I started off working full-time and not caring about school. Since I've been back (2 years), I've received straight A's, but it's still only pulled me up to a 3.4.
Thanks for EVERYTHING and ANY info you can give me guys. I would LOVE to attend JHU, and would do whatever it took to make it; I just hope I haven't screwed myself by preferring work over school in the beginning.
Take care,
Tanya
Hi Peachy, I am starting the traditional program this Fall. JHU does not seem to be terribly gpa oriented. They really do look at the whole person: work experiences, overcoming difficulties, leadership potential, etc. Your essay is your opportunity to sell yourself.
1. What GPA's did you guys have going in? GRE scores?
My GPA for prereq courses is a 4.0. However, due to my previous college career in the early 80's my OVERALL GPA is like a 3.0. Yes, I was young and totally not ready for school. I have not taken the GRE yet.
2. For those who are already in or have completed the accelerated program, can you please give me some insight into how difficult it is/was? Did you find you could achieve above a 3.0 without a nervous breakdown ( )
I don't know the answer to this one.

I was born and raised in New Orleans. I attended USL (ranked in the top 10 for party schools at that time) and UNO while I worked full-time waiting tables. This explains my overall GPA, no?
4. Does anyone know if they look at only your overall GPA or your pre-reqs and last 60 hours as well? I started off working full-time and not caring about school. Since I've been back (2 years), I've received straight A's, but it's still only pulled me up to a 3.4.
As I said before, I don't think your grades will be an issue as long as you have other qualities that you can highlight in your essay. I can't even tell you how embarrassing it was to have to send those transcripts from UNO and USL. :uhoh21:
Also, I am older, 43, and I retired two years ago from the Coast Guard. I am a certified EMT and I have my CNA license in the state of Oregon.
Thanks for EVERYTHING and ANY info you can give me guys. I would LOVE to attend JHU, and would do whatever it took to make it; I just hope I haven't screwed myself by preferring work over school in the beginning.
So, no, you aren't screwed. One thing I wished I had is some volunteer experience. If you have time, I would look into that.
Good luck with your plans and keep us posted.

Hi Gwen!!
Oh my gosh, what a small world!!! I was born and raised in Metairie, transferred to Lafayette with my parents when I was 16, and am now attending ULL (formerly USL)!!! I completely understand what you mean about the Overall GPA thing..how can they expect you to concentrate when the Strip is right across the street? As for UNO, be proud--it's considered the second hardest university in La.!
I can't thank you enough for taking the time out to respond to me!! Congrats on your acceptance!!
Good luck on the GRE! You'll do fine!! Let me know how it goes!
Do you miss La. at all? I think the only thing I'll miss if/when I leave is the family and the food (particularly the crawfish! :chuckle )!
Take care,
Tanya
Hi there,
I looked at some apt listings and there are some apts in the Mt Vernon area (9 E. Eager Street) and was wondering if that area is safe.
I also saw some apts near Guilford and 30th (in Charles Village) and E 30th Street and Calvert Streets. Does anyone have any opinions about living in those neighborhoods? I'm going out to accepted students day on April 1st, staying the weekend to find an apt! It's much colder there than being here in N. California! Thanks.

For JHUSON accepted students day, I'd like to stay near Charles Village or between CV and downtown. I will rent a car so I can visit apts. But if it's close to 29th to 35th? and Charles? I'm not sure of the street name, but close to the JHU Homewood campus would be fine. If the downtown inner harbor is not too expensive, I could do that too. Thanks!
