Can anyone here give some insight on the differences between the two programs? If you had to decide between the two schools which would you choose...granted JHU is twice as expensive! Is it worth it? And how much can they really help you financially? Are there any major differences between the two schools in terms of education, personal attention, outside opportunities, clinicals, job search??? I would greatly appreciate any input!
Thanks again, Smile!Soooooo??? How'ditgoHow'ditgoHow'ditgo??? **bouncing up and down**
Hehe, I'm worse than a little kid!
Hi Peachy,
I just got back late tonight. I didn't have internet access while I was at the JHU Accepted Students Day, so pardon the delay. Yes, as Tamm1 says, it was very exciting. They had both the accelerated and the traditional BSN accepted candidates there. I think there must of been 300 people there (students, parents and friends). It reaffirmed that I made the correct choice to go to Hopkins. They had 3 panel discussions where we heard about careers, faculty, and current students. We also were able to buy/order our uniforms, an introductory calculations book and some medical equipment (stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, etc.) At the end of each panel, we got to ask a lot of questions. I especially liked hearing from the current students. They gave their honest opinions and not just the "party line" you might hear from some faculty. I also met some students in my class, but it was a blur. I think it will be easier to remember who is who when we are in classes together in June.
Then I also went apt hunting. It was challenging because I was not familar with the neighborhoods. But I finally found a place in Charles Village which I'm sharing with some other nursing students in the same program. So it worked out very well. I was glad I went. Thanks for asking!

Smile,
I was unable to attend to Acceptd Students Day, but I am accepted and plan to enroll for the Fall traditional program. I really regret that I was unable to make it. What were some of the current students opinions, and what was their advice? What did you mean by the statement, "they didn't just give the party line?"

Hehehe, I hope that didn't sound impatient--I was just so excited for you guys..Yes, I'm a nut! :hidesofa:
Thanks again smile and tamm; I'm so excited for you guys--T minus 2 months!
Smile--I've heard from so many that Charles Village is unbelievable!! I think you hit the jackpot!! :) [i've been to Baltimore once, and fell in love with the two places I remember going: Little Italy (mmm..stromboli!) and the Inner Harbor.
woolfda, I'll let Smile have the definitive answer, but basically, other colleges and universities will only allow their "golden boys and girls" to take part in these things...the ones that will say there is NOTHING about their school they'd change, etc...Glad that they do that, Smile, I've been "suckered" in a couple times!

You are correct. The last panel of the day was "Talk to a Student". There were 8 to 10 students with various backgrounds who spoke candidly to us. There were no profs or administration in the room. It was refreshing to hear them speak. Some of them even said, "Hopkins may not have the same point of view or may not want us to say this but..." I don't remember the particulars, but I got the feeling they were genuine.
I'm going to put in a plug for the Yahoo group for the accelerated JHUSON class. If you want to discuss other details further, go ahead and sign up for the FREE Yahoo group (We gave the URL at the accepted students day; it was started by a student who was on the chat session we had last month with JHUSON.) The Yahoo group is not sanctioned by JHUSON. It is just a group of students who will be entering JHU in June who have questions about housing, tuition, classes, health insurance, safety, etc. There is also a group set up for the traditional students, again, not sanctioned by the school.
For accelerated students (entering June 2005):

For traditional students: (entering Sept 2005):

Hope that helps.

Hehe..
I have a confession to make. I've been visiting your group daily since you put the link up a couple pages ago...:chuckle
I just figured I'd keep "lurking" because this is for you guys..to get acquainted, find roomates, housing, parking and all the good stuff..
I'm glad there's such a camraderie between you guys already!:balloons:
Okay, if I can ask ONE more question, and I swear I'll stop. I really do need to call JHU anyways to find out what Nutrition they want.
Here's the deal. I'll graduate with my BS next fall. Since applications for accelerated are due in Nov., would I have ANY chance of them taking me because they wouldn't have my degree until a couple weeks before classes start (but I will have my prereqs done this fall)? Does this make any sense? Basically, have any of you gotten accepted before you received your first degree?
Whew.

Hi Peachy,
You're fine. I figure the yahoo group delves more into the details of JHU which may be of little interest to everyone else on the forum, but that's OK if you are a "lurker".
You are asking a good question. I don't know. It sounds like you really need to call them. Which program are you going for - the accelerated or traditional? The accelerated class starts in June. It is for people who already have their bachelor's degrees. Will you still be taking classes for your BS in the summer of 2006? If so, that would not work because the class load is very intense for the accelerated program during the summer.
The traditional program which starts in the fall (2 year program vs. 13.5 months). There are people there who have not finished their BS degrees and are continuing on to get the BSN/RN. (Although when they asked how many people already had their degree during accepted students day, nearly 95% of all the people in the room (accel and trad) raised their hands! It was a very qualified group!) Call them so you can get your nutrition and other questions answered! Good luck!

Hi Smile!!
YOU ARE A SAINT!! Seriously, thanks for being so patient and so helpful!
Yeah,I find everything on the groups exciting; but like I said, I figure it's more for you guys. I'll probably post here and there wishing you guys luck.
The place you found is GORGEOUS, girlie!! I LOVE lofts!! Do they allow pets? **crosses fingers**
Thanks again. Yep, I'll probably call JHU when I work up some nerve. Don't want to sound like a rambling idiot, which I pretty much do when it's someone important! :stone
Take care!
Tanya
Okay, I lied. I have another question. I'm going to post this in the pre-nursing forum as well, but as JHU is my dream school, I figured you guys can help me with this one.
Okay, so I'm trying to finish the first degree. It's Psychology. I'm pretty much apathetic toward it. I just want to be done so I can finally get to nursing school. I have everything done except about 6 Psych Classes, plus Nutrition, A&P, and A&PII.
If I were to switch my major to General Studies, I could graduate this fall, and be done with my pre-reqs, and apply to JHU this fall. If I stay with Psych, I'll be graduating next fall.
Should I switch? I know General Studies is a degree, but will it look bad to JHU (does that make sense)? Or should I finish out Psych and spend the extra year building up more volunteer and extra-curricular activity hours?
Thanks guys!! I can't tell you how much I appreciate it!! :balloons:
Also, I was going to try and head up to Baltimore to meet with a counselor, but since I don't have $300+ to spare, I have to just do it by phone/email. Since there are so many questions, should I just e-mail them a long letter asking for a reply whenever they can; or, do I seem more interested if I call?
ACK..
I am an out of state resident that decided to attend UM in 2003 (I graduate next week). As an out of state resident, you may receive in state tuition if you agree to work anywhere in Maryland for fours years as an RN. I began working at Johns Hopkins Hospital in July. The University of Maryland has a great program and I would highly recommend the new MSN Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) program for second degree students. If you want to become a Nurse Practitioner, you may enter a Post-Master's NP Program after the CNL and therefore save time.
Here is a link to the out of state tuition reduction program:

I actually live here already, so i didn't need to look for a place, but there were speeches and panels so we could have our questions answered as well as time to buy the uniforms, equip and shoes! it was a really nice day since i got to meet a lot of nice incoming students as well as a lot of happy current students!
