Hopkins vs. UMD

Published

Can anyone here give some insight on the differences between the two programs? If you had to decide between the two schools which would you choose...granted JHU is twice as expensive! Is it worth it? And how much can they really help you financially? Are there any major differences between the two schools in terms of education, personal attention, outside opportunities, clinicals, job search??? I would greatly appreciate any input!

Actually in the state of Maryland, since theres a national shortage. Any out of state resident will qualify for INSTATE tuition if there major is nursing, physician assistant, pharmacy, etc. You can check out the MD state aid site it tells you that. This is the site to check out: http://www.mhec.state.md.us/

Thanks for the link. It does says that the out of state resident would qualify for in-state tuition. But Hopkins is a private school, so the in-state and out of state tuition fees are the same - both high!

I am so happy to see that I am not the only one who is deciding between the two schools. My experience with JHU has been that they are very "customer friendly" while MD's attitude is "you need us more than we need you." I have also heard that MD has amazing facilities but that many people have had nasty professors. Does anyone know anything about these issues? Or if having JHU on your resume helps to get into the masters program you want? Is JHU a quality school that is very costly or a costly school that is not really as good as MD or the rest of the JHU programs but has the JHU name? I'd really appreciate any feedback!

Thanks!

I have been accepted into JHUSON's Accelerated BSN program to direct entry masters. I start in June 2005.

Here's what I heard from some of the students there. If you enter JHUSON's BSN program and decide to apply to the JHU master's later on, you have an excellent chance of being accepted. (They know you and they already know your grades from the BSN program.) JHUSON is #5 in the nation for nursing schools and they definitely care about you. The Hopkins name can open a lot of doors for you. I got a very favorable impression from them. Hope that helps.

I went to UMB and have mixed feelings. I got an awesome education, and had clinicals at a variety of hospitals. We even got to pick clinical sites, something I understand Hopkins students can't do. Some of the profs are downright rude, though, and there are administration SNAFUs up the wazoo. But it's very cheap compared to Hopkins, and the school facilities are new.

Talking to Hopkins nursing students, however, there are very similar problems there as well. In terms of master's programs, they are both excellent. UMB has more choices, but Hopkins has the name.

Does anyone know if UMAB gives preferential treatment to their own nursing students for their masters program? I would like to go to UMAB's nurse anesthetist program and am wondering if its better to have been at UMAB for my undergrad or to come from JHU with the Hopkins name. Thanks for your help!!

Actually, you do get to state your preference as to clinical sites and shifts.

It sounds like you are at JHU. If i am correct, do you enjoy it? Is it cut-throat student vs. student or is it a friendly atmosphere where people study together and help each other? Are the professors as "customer friendly" as the admissions office seems to be? Do you recommend JHU? How are the professors? The facilities? I heard that MD has great facilities with outstanding dummy labs to learn on. Does JHU have the same?

I went to the JHUSON Open House March 5th and they showed us SIM man, a patient dummy. They have SIM men that simulate patient symptoms and one even "talks" to you. The larger meeting rooms have internet connections and power outlets for every "desk" (they are actually long rows of tables with lot of Internet connections). That's very impressive! I would be interested to hear from current and former students on the rest of the questions listed above.

Thanks! And i'd also really appreciate any input from any JHU and MD students re the professors, atmosphere, other students, facilities, education level, etc. It would be great to get the inside scoop from people who are there...especially about the professors the classes.

Tamm1 - Did you apply to Maryland for Fall 2005? Have you heard from them yet? I called yesterday and they said that I would not get a letter until after April 1st. I sent my application in back in December and thought I would have heard by now.

I go to UMB now (in the accelerated program). I agree w/ Mel (PennyLane) - there are really great labs and mannequins to practice on (we also have SIMman and also a SIMmom). Some of the administrative staff is rude and they can get disorganized (they lost some of my application). Some of the profs have also been known to be quite callous with students, even if you have a valid issue to discuss with them.

I have a clinical at Hopkins now, and love the atmosphere at the hospital there. I've met quite a few nurses who graduated from UMB (tho it was many years ago) who say they hated UMB. I don't hate it, but don't love it either. They are updating the curriculum to make a better learning experience for some of the courses, which I think is great and wish they had done it in time for my class.

feel free to ask any other questions or PM me about UMB.
