Hi,

I am not sure what country you are working in, and you don't say whether you are interested in an acute dialysis unit or a community based dialysis unit. However if you can gain some experience in an acute renal ward it should help you gain a position in an acute dialysis unit or a community based dialysis unit.

I am not sure that you are aware that there is increasing numbers of dialysis patients now being trained and discharged to undertake (mostly) nocturnal dialysis at home. In Australia, this is probably the most exciting part of renal nursing development.

I am not sure how widespread this is around the world, however, it is a very rewarding job and the patients are highly motivated.

Specializes in Dialysis, Long-term care, Med-Surg.

Hello,

Dialysis nursing can be very rewarding, BUT, I warn you to find a private center and not go to Davita or FMC. They are terrible!

You also have to prepare yourselves for the Tech that think they know more than you do, even after you're fully trained. I also recommend that you ask your employer to have another nurse train you and not a tech.

Be prepared for loooong hours and maybe 1 break and a 30 min lunch. Good Luck!

currently im in the philippines and don't know where to train...

yeah my grandmother told me that i should go to a community and i was hoping to train as a tech and a nurse lets say to be more competent i dont care about the break hours as long as i have sometime to go to the comfort room and eat and maybe some power naps

what book is decent for this specialization..? (Fluids and electrolytes any other?)

till then thanks

Hi!

My husband and I am Dialysis trained nurses from Germany and since 6 month in Sydney. We love to life here, but the Dialysis unit is bad. So maybe someone can recomend another unit, in NSW or VIC? We both are high motivated and my husband could do a NUM or a CNC or CNE Job.

Thanks for your resonse!

if anyone here knows where can I have a training to be a dialysis nurse. I am from the Philippines. I've been looking for months now and I cant still find one to have my training.

thanks!!!:nuke:

Specializes in ER, Renal Dialysis.

Dialysis centres should be abundant in your state. The number of end stage renal failure patients requiring thrice weekly sessions is more than what a hospital can handle. These places helps to alleviate the burden. You can get chronic dialysis experience there.

Dialysis is very technical and takes a long time to master. It is a sub-specialty of nephrology nursing - which is a HUGE specialty by itself. Dialysis nurses usually have to arrive at the workplace very early - like 5-5.30 am to get the schedule ahead or else you end up going back late. The change of shifts can be hectic and it's damn demanding on your physique. I thought it was a breeze compared to the lifting in the wards or ER, but it's more or less the same or more. Most patients are either very old and disabled - legs amputated due to DM complications, obese, needing assistance as effect of renal bone disease that makes the bones fragile to fracture. Lifting and moving them can be a challenge.

do u know a specific location here in the Phil? I really want to be trained as a dialysis nurse.

thanks!!:nurse:

OK, I was exaggerating. It's like 6-6.30 am really.
