Hopeful... But very discouraged

Published

I just moved to TN from MI while my husband is attending med. School. Since we are in a place with absolutely no distractions, I figured this would be a great time to pursue my goal of completing a degree in nursing. Unfortunately, I've set myself up for failure by having a lot of zeros on my transcript. When I first started college, I was working a job that was conflicting with school but needed to stay employed so ended up compromising my GPA by not completing or dropping several courses. I currently have a 1.8 GPA. I've retaken a few and plan to retake 3 more this semester. I know I can do well now that I'm older, more focused and determined with less distraction. I'm just concerned they won't even look at me because of my current GPA. Has anyone else been this position and gotten in to a program? Any suggestions?

Hello,

I am kind of in the same boat as you. My GPA from my first college was 0.689 and my second school was 3.02; which came to a 1.8. I haven't gotten into a nursing program yet, however, I did get into the school which required a collective 2.5. I guess that they seen that it had been years between the two, so they gave me a shot. I don't know the true reason, whatever it is I'm grateful. The school I applied to requires a pre entrance exam, interview, and an essay. So, I will be giving the requirements all I got to make up for the GPA.

Maybe you will have this sort of chance to prove yourself. Try to take as little classes as possible to get all A's to really prove that you are taking the chance serious. Try to avoid any B's before you get into the program.:twocents:

Just keep trying. There are many places who will look at either your most recent 60 hours or your last few years rather than your overall GPA. There are also some that only look at your GPA from your pre-reqs. Research all your options that are near by, and hopefully you'll find one. Good luck!

I know that some schools (including the one I will apply to) only look at the GPA from the pre-reqs they require. So maybe find out what classes are required and retake any that you have a very low grade in. Also, if it has been a long time since you have taken some of those classes, you may have to retake them anyway. My school will only accept some of the science classes if it has been less than 5 years since you took them. Also, I know my school puts a big emphasis on your TEAS score, especially the reading score. So if your GPA is not as high but you score well on the test, you might be fine.

Don't be discouraged! It sounds like you are on the right track and are very focused on what you need to do. :yelclap:

If you do your pre-reqs your GPA will jump up. I did not have a high GPA from college, but after taking my pre-reqs at a local community college, my GPA was a 3.9 by the time I was accepted into nursing school. If you are serious about nursing school, do very well in your pre-reqs esp. Micro, Patho, Anatomy, and Pharm and nursing school will be in reach for you :)

My school is the same way; only the nursing pre-reqs are considered in your admission consideration GPA. I have incompletes, withdrawals, retakes, Z's( I don't even know what those ARE!) all over my transcript. But I did well in pre-reqs and that's all that matters. Anyway, don't be discouraged! Good luck to you!
