Hooters as Job History...Could this hurt my chances of getting a job?

Published

I am in nursing school and will graduate this august and I have been applying for Patient care tech jobs for several months now and haven't heard anything. I do not have any experience working in a hospital but I figured my clinical experience and that I'm in nursing school about to graduate would make up for that. I am young so I have very little work experience. I've only had 3 jobs one as a cashier, one as a waitress/bartender at hooters, and one as a bartender in a neighborhood bar. My question is, Do you think putting down hooters as job experience is hurting my chances of getting a job? Would it be a bad idea to change it to a more tasteful restaurant like olive garden? lol I would love an answer from anyone who is a manager or does hiring and knows if that would hurt my chances? But any feedback would be great!

To nurse 2300 and and RN dude1, I worked at the 2nd busiest hooters in the U.S. so it was a very high pressure job. I still have nightmares about it lol. The training there is really extensive. I was a corporate trainer and trained 20 to 30 girls during my time there. That job was the closest thing to working in a hospital so I think its relevent but I worry about those ignorant people. I think I am just going to add more to my resume about what I did at that job that relates to nursing and see if it helps.

Do you have anything on your resume about the workload and training you did? Or do you just have the dates worked? I would definitely expand on your experience there on the resume if you're not already.

i just wouldn't put it down at all. if i were hiring, i wouldn't think anything was wrong with it, but there's a lot of things i don't see a problem with that would have the holy roller types turning over in their graves. not to mention, if it's a female hiring and they see that, they might be intimidated aka jealous and not give you a chance. everyone knows you have to have at least a nice body to work at hooters.

i've only been interviewed by one female in my life, and it's also the only job i didn't get hired for. now, i'm no hooters girl, but this lady was about 350 and i couldn't help but wonder if i would've gotten the job if the interviewer was different. i was actually overqualified for the job so it just made no sense.

If you were overqualified for the job, they probably were worried you'd jump ship as soon as something better came along. OP worked there for over a year and trained a few dozen employees- that's pretty high level experience to leave off a resume.

If you leave it off your resume, not only are you giving in to the ignorant people, you're also omitting what sounds like a significant part of your work history.

Just love the male support you're getting Op. Hey, it is kinda cute of them isn't it? :)

I looked up the corporate stuff on Hooters hoping to find a larger holding company that you might be able to list instead (and not be lying) but no, it is Hooters. If there is a legit way to avoid listing that job, I would not list it. But if it cannot be avoided, just say your position was Corporate Trainer...

Edit: Now, I say this because I worry for the OP. If she gets some old worn out "battle axe" - she's gonna either get a big NO vote, or it's gonna get spread around for the others who have very little pride in their own selves to chew on. BTW, I can say "old" because I am 47 (but I'm a hottie folks (a tired one) but a hottie none the less!)

I count more votes in favor of keeping the experience on the resume from posters self-identifying as women than as men.

I meant votes in favor of hiring her from nursing staff (not this board).

It's possible that you aren't getting job offers not because of the Hooters job, but because many places have cut back so much on budgets and hiring. I'd leave the experience on there. Personally, I think the responsibilities that you held add a lot to your resume.

You should omit it from your resume, u know it and everyone here knows it. Has nothing to do with Healthcare and it has potentially negative connotations with some employers. You were going to school at the time, that can easily explain your unemployment gap if hiring asks about it.

I had a friend who, while younger and feeling his way through things, worked at a downtown XXX store (with the videos and everything else). He, like me, was in landscaping but hated winter snow removal. So, he took winters off and did that. Why there? Because he could easily get there by bus, they offered him the hours he wanted and they paid $3 more than other things he could have done (short order cooking like me, cashiering elsewhere).

He left landscaping long before I did and went into teaching. He was very conscious about what people would think about his work history. I didn't think it'd be an issue, but he sure did. Just thought it sent the wrong message. He was really only there because it paid more.

So, he wrote his resume as being in "retail" and gave the proper address/phone number and dates he worked. So, yes, if they investigated, they would have known. But he figured it showed........he was not willing to lie about it but it did not "jump off the page" the way it would have had he written the store name "Erotic Fantasy Emporium" or w/e it was.

I would leave it out...it is not relevant to what you want to do at all.

I find this post to be incredibly condescending and rube. "Everyone" here does not know that the OP should omit this info from her resume. I see no problem with putting it on her resume. I have been to Hooters, and as a woman, I see nothing wrong with it. If I was looking for waitress work I would consider working there. The girls at Hooter's are more modes than strippers or Media stars, and certainly more talented too.
