I was invited to the nursing honors society and everyone says it's a big deal to join. I've even heard that some nurses have been turned away from graduate school (with fantastic GPAs) because they weren't a member... I do plan on going to graduate school at some point, but is this really necessary?

Okay, seriously though ... no you won't be turned down JUST because you didn't join haha.
Should you join? Of course. Join every organization you can. However, be an active member. Don't be one of the members that joins but never went to any events whatsoever.

Sigma Theta Tau, which I assume is the one you're talking about, is the only honor society for nursing and is international. You can always pay to be a member this year and if you don't get anything out of it, not pay next year. You are still a member, just an inactive one. At any time you can pay the membership due and become an active member again. That's what I've been told anyway.
Congrats!
