Hondros College of Nursing - Input??????

Published

I am actively looking into Nursing Schools in the Cincinnati Area. I am starting the application process at Hondros and was wondering if anyone had any feedback about their program, good, bad or indifferent. I know its a relatively new program but they have recently receieved their final approval so Im assuming they have worked out the kinks that were reported in blogs posted early last year.

I would appreciate any feedback you may have.

Thank you!!

Hi Patel748!

Well this is very reassuring for me & makes me feel better about the decision to go here! Thanks for the input & you will have to PM me w/ the teachers names so I can be prepared! LOL! Good luck on your test and keep updating as the semester progresses!

I am also at the Cincinnati campus and started in July and I completely disagree with you! You are making Hondros sound like a second rate education and that is certainly NOT the case at all! I and many of my friends feel like we are getting our money's worth. The teachers are not terrible at all. They do not strictly read off of the powerpoints, and are always up for questions. When you do bad on a test they want you to come see them so they can help you! I have been to teachers' offices and emailed them and they have always been more than willing to help. They want everyone to pass. Now not everyone passes- because the program is hard. You were told that multiple times during information sessions, meetings, and orientation. It is to be expected , they have to fit as much information in 11 months when a normal paced LPN program takes a year and a half. The reason why we had ONE chapter of chemistry in A&P and we do math in Nursing Concepts is because we do not have to tak any pre requisites . A family member of mine, went to another college, and had to take three quarters of chemistry before she could even begin the LPN program. Yes a 78 is failing , but you will find this at every nursing program, it's not exclusively at Hondros. Same with the financial aid, if you fail out of a class , you have to pay for it. The check offs are not difficult . Memorize the skill and you will pass. Honestly if you can't pass simple skills such as vital signs, pericare, or a head to toe assessment it would not be safe for Hondros to give you a license to practice on real people ! You get two shots at it, so if you mess up or forget something the first time, you are required to go to an open lab before you try again, so a teacher will give you 1 on 1 attention and help you with whatever you messed up.

Half of our class is not failing, yes quite a few have failed out by now , but that was just people that were not willing to put in the hours of studying to pass the classes. You will also find this at any other fast paced nursing schools. I have another friend who went to another college, and her class started out the beginning of LPN year with 75 students and only 32 graduated. Nursing School is hard! Definitely a fast paced program, it does require 2-3 hrs of study outside class for every hour in class. They told us that and if you are not willing to do that then you are wasting your money. But it has nothing to do with our teachers. They are required to go fast paced but are always willing to help either by email or by visiting them in their office. They have at least two office hours a day three to four days a week! They even offer tutoring . They answer every question to the best of their knowledge. Of course they won't be able to answer every single off the wall off topic "what if?" question. They know the nursing profession top to bottom but are not medical dictionaries. The "pop " quizzes in A&P are on the syllabus and so are the in class assignments. We have only had one in class assignment, and she went over the answers with us at the end of class, the only way you got a 0 is if you weren't there.

Many of your class members have seen this post and are pretty upset, you are making Hondros in Cincinnati look like a bad school when they are in fact a great school. They have a 93% passing rate on the NCLEX-PN. That is great and is far above other nursing schools in the area. It seems to many of us that you are just being negative because you probably have not kept up with the workload and want to blame it on everybody else.

I to, will agree with proudmommyof1, Hondros is a great school and I am personally enjoying every moment! The teachers are all wonderful and always willing to help ANYONE! If you are willing to put in the time that is required to be successful (which actually goes on through life not just in school) you will go far - if you are not - You won't go far and you will look to blame others as you are with the teachers instead of yourself. My only comment is grow up and start applying yourself if you want to be successful - if not then don't but don't give our school a bad rap. Hondros will not be for every student, it is an extremely fast paced school (hence accelerated program - who would of thought?) -- I really feel you were out of line "Beauty Iridescent" in regards to your entire blog - why are you even still at Hondros?

Hi guys, i'll be starting at hondros in the fall, and i read what "beauty" wrote, and honestly maybe thats just her experience. I've been checking this website daily for weeks now trying to figure out if hondros is right from me, but from the way it sounds, they were not as organized before as they are now. Bottom line is, they are only getting better. I dont know how it is in the cinncinati campus, but i'll b going to the columbus campus. Either way, i'm just saying, hondros is doing well for itself. Teachers may have been terrible before but i know they're bringing in new faculty members cuz they are trying to get their nlnac, for which they need to meet certain requirements. So if anything they're getting better, slowly..but surely. Anyway, i just wanted to say was that "beauty" probably had bad experiences with her teachers. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but dont bash on the school. Either way it was an opinionated blog. Hope u have better luck in the future "beauty". :)

Hi guys and gals,

I am kindda back and forth on this post in whether to be angry or not. I mean yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion...and she (beauty) was talking bad about the teachers, but also said that the program over all was better than other schools...at the same time maybe it would be better to say just yourself, not include all the other students. aside from that, if you are still participating in class your own attitude certainly wont help your grades.

i am also in this same class i mean i am at the cinci lpn program that started this july. and, not sure if youre one of those who were in class today, but i found this because someone annouced about it in class. i bet if you are in it (as I am now so excuse the punctuation but i am trying to type this fast) you are braced for a lot of responses.

just fyi, i do think beauty you are misreading the teachers. especially the a&p teacher. she really does care about how you are doing. and I know this because as I was getting ready to meet with the fundamentals teacher, she stopped and asked how i was doing and if anything is going on because i had missed class. so i asked to meet with her then. she was very nice and sweet, encouraging in trying to find ways to help me out.

also as one of the other posters already said, some of the things you pointed out are correct about the school. For example the 78% is passing and money being refunded to the government etc. honestly most all schools are like this, even other majors aside from nursing. that is all i have to say, be more careful in the future and think about how you word things. if youre not careful you may risk getting in trouble with slander or something.

Hi everyone!

I am new here and honestly I joined because I heard about the comment that "beauty" made and read it. I was very upset by what she said about the instructor and the school. I am in the RN program at Hondros but I graduated the LPN progam from Hondros so I know that it is possible to make it through. I was one of those students that did not pass my first quarter and had to repeat classes. So the comments about if you fail one class you have to repeat them all is false, and also the comment about you cannot move on until your bill is paid is a little out there too. If you attend any other college and have to register for classes whether you are repeating them or not you have to pay your bill first.

The first quarter of the LPN program is not easy by any means but in a way it has its own way of weading out those who should not be there because of a lack of motivation. With failing the first quarter I realized that I needed to change. What I needed to change was not how I studied but how much I studied and how much I really want to be a nurse. Finding fault within yourself is one the hardest things people will ever have to do but if you cannot do this you will not be a great nurse. Hondros College of Nursing produces great nurses because the students are honest, have integrity and are caring and compasionate. But most importantly they want to succeed and are not afraid to admit when they are wrong or when they need help. Being a nurse is about helping others and if you cannot even help yourself admit fault then how can you help others physically, mentally or emotionally. I sincerly apologize to the instructor that 'beauty' is referring to. This instructor is a great teacher and is preparing the students to be successful in the field.

Please do not get discouraged by the negative comments of this school because it is one of the best in the area, "beauty" even stated that herself. Just hold your heads up high and remember if you start to struggle the instructors always have their doors open to talk, just dont wait till two weeks before the finals and say you need help. Just some helpful advise from someone who has been there.

Hi All!

Just have a quick question, I wanted to know what was included in the nurse pack that the school provides for the LPN program? I want to start buying supplies, but don't want to buy something if it's included, ie] stethescope, watch, pen light etc...

Thanks!:clown:

Hi Flawless!

Honestly everything like that we received from the school in a dark reddish bag. Stethoscope, gait belt, penlight and all! Though my penlight is bothersome, I keep having to replace it but other than that you're good to go. You will want a simple watch with a second hand. That's about it, they give you everything you need for lab and clinical for the whole year, at the very beginning (if I remember right I got the supplies first day of class, and the technology package a little bit later but not too much). I can't remember right now where you said you'd be attending class, but at the West Chester campus if you can bring you're own printer paper you can print everything in the library so you don't have to worry about ink :) The first few days of class I just brought the class syllabus and a notebook until I could decide how I wanted to organize. I ended up just getting 3 folders and one big binder. I put the little dividers in the binder to separate class notes. You might also want a 3 prong whole puncher, when I print the power point slides I printed them on both sides, 3 slides on front and 3 on the back, and then put them in my binder by date that we went over them. But, just an fyi i am maybe not entirely the best person to recommend tips- I am going to be a repeat next quarter :(

I recently didn't pass one of my check offs and was going to go for my 2nd attempt, but I lost the paper. I tried and tried but I couldn't find it. It's like youre ticket to get in you have to have it. So I missed my second chance and will be repeating these nurse classes :( But I'm not too terribly upset because I was having trouble getting to classes due to car issues anyways. Well, good luck to ya!

Thanks Suri for the great info!

I will be @ westerville! Hang in there @ least now u know what to expect!

Good Luck!

Flawless T -

Hondros does supply all you need as suri wild expressed, but I would recommend a Littman's stethoscope if it falls within your budget. If you feel you will be using Index cards for flash cards and studying, go ahead and start stocking up on those to, they go quick. I tried to get as much prepared as I could before school started, if you have access to the computer system (typically not available until 1 - 2 weeks prior to term starting) you can print out all your syllabuses and know what is coming up - if you use a planner list everything that you will be having each day and if there is pre-reading to be done. It is very helpful to do all you can prior to class once it starts, studying is tough and constant! Good luck to you - it is a great program.

Allforthefam-

Thanks for the great advice! Yea I wass actually going to purchase a Littman before school starts, I have been hearing their the best!! And as far as flashcards, I have been buying them all summer!! Can never have too many! I have access to CAMS now, but don't see any syllabus on there yet, but I check it daily! Good Luck & Thanks again!!

I'm currently in the RN at the Westerville campus, and I went through the LPN program there.

There were certainly hiccups and missteps along the way, they've only been running a nursing school for a couple years - but they already have a great reputation.

OhioHealth is working with them for all RN clinicals, which is amazing, because there are established schools like Chamberlain that are not lucky enough to get all hospital clinicals for their RNs.

The classes are accelerated, and they are difficult. If you aren't prepared to study, run away! During LPN, every other week was a test or exam of some sort - they don't let you have "off" weeks because you have to keep studying.

If you ever want more to know, or need help while you're there, send me a PM.
