Homesickness in my first year

Published

I am extreemly homesick and it is getting worse and worse, and the more I try to talk myself into being rationale the more I hear songs and stuff which reminds me of home. So all you veteran EX-Pats how did you get through your first year away from UK. My family is settled, we have a nice life, the weather is lovely but I miss home and it is a deep ache like nothing I have ever experienced in my life.

I miss my job as bad as it was sometimes in the NHS, I miss my friends, I miss my life, I miss the food, I miss the familiarity, I miss knowing how to behave, I miss people who understand me without having to explain myself repeatedly. It doesnt help that others say they feel the same way what I want to know is Does it go away.

So the truth for the other nurses who experienced home sickness how long did it last and when did it go away???????

to english nurse yep it will work as long as you still have your home bank accounts(.GB ONLY) for direct debits. just ask your local sat tech to face your dish 28.2 degrees east. dish size 90 cm(standard). sky broadcasts on the ASTRA satelite.

its what most expats do when they move to spain as they cant follow spanish tele. failing that if you have highspeed internet try www.skype.com. you can talk for free to any person who has the same program download anywhere in the world via the internet. you basically dail a friends computer if he or she is online and chat (no typing). by investing in a web camera and computer microphone you will be able to see family members live on computer. My wife is czech and she has many long conversations with her family in real time free(taking into account time differances across europe). its not expensive just the cost of your local highspeed internet service subsription per month.

Try it its fun.

so plato, about TV, you say in spain it works, have you enquired as to whether this works in the USA? as spain is quite far from there:lol2:

actually i will look into this myself i think, mind you i dont fancy climbing up the ladder to get my dish down

also i expect it will be alot of bucks to ship it out, is it really worth it

right i have looked and basically in spain, yes you can pick up the Astra satellite with british programmes

but USA it doesnt appear that you can

here is the link

http://markets.ses-astra.com/market/british_isles/viewer_28_footprints.htm

when this question was asked in another forum recently the posters there left the link above, on it is a map outlining the areas the british Astra satillite covers

they do have an american site, but it broadcasts the USA programmes by the look of it

someone may have some different information but thats the way i read it

How are you doing now MW? You've been so helpful to me over this year with your posts I hate to think you're so sad.

I hope things are looking up for you now!

With all that's going on here with so-called British citizens who want to blow up innocent people in mid-air I hope you're a little happier you are where you are!

My other half was saying just the same as you yesterday!! SPOOKY, never had him down as having ESP - he certainly never seems to know what I want unless I actually tell him!! :lol2:

tv over here is nothing like the uk as you will all know from visiting here. even if you pay for bbc america, its nearly all ancient, with benny hill and monty python, and the world news from the bbc is just that ....world news not from the uk, so even that is disapointing. occasionaly theres a decent programme, but not very often.

Just read the BBC news re the bomb threats in UK airports affecting flights to the US. That made me sad and worried. We have know since last july that we have home grown terrorists in Britain and that just freaks me out. I feel sorry for the travellers, and hope things settle soon.

RGN thank you for asking I am less homesick, I believe for me I have withdrawn all strong pain meds and I think that they may have been affecting my mood . I have never taken medication in my life and for the past 6 months I have swallowed pills like there is no tomorrow. Although today I feel like I have been run over by a steam roller after having an epidural and trigger point injections yesterday. They warned me I would feel like that but I hadnt imagined how bad lol. I had some co-prox so I took that with some brufen so relief is mine soon I hope.

It was bad when I was there just read my journal for last year, but I loved my job and the people I worked with. Myself and the other sister would work hard for our staff and gave them lots of support so I felt I was doing a worthwhile job. I always promised myself i would listen and try to sort out their worried and problems at work. It was a really good place to work, especially if you had a family.
