HOLY CRAP! I missed my job interview!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I have been preparing for the NCLEX basically 12 hours a day for two weeks. I had a job interview last week and this week! Last week I made it early and got a job offer in my inbox by the time I drove home. This week I got my dates mixed up!!!!

I thought my interview was TODAY but it was YESTERDAY!!!

I had contacted nursing recruitment via email last night (it was too late to call) and I called this morning, but nursing recruitment has it set up so that the receptionist is a recording and you have to push some buttons and then leave a voice-mail. No option of getting in contact with a recruiter personally.

I can't leave a voicemail discussing my problem not knowing who will listen to it, so I gave my name and number and expressed the need to speak to the specific recruiter I had previously been in contact with. In the email I sent to the nurse recruiter I did apologize and tell them how I was completely devastated and I had just been at a loss of time preparing for my NCLEX and wanted to reschedule.

So far, no contact. But it usually took a few days in the past. But this is dire! I cannot believe I have done such a thing! I even went for a trial run to the hospital yesterday, its over an hour away, I was right there!! And in my mind I thought the interview was today!! This is so out of my character. I had pressed my outfit, gathered all my information, and wanted to double check on the email that I had everything they requested.. and there it was.. "June 24, 2008". My jaw dropped.

This is a very elite hospital, with a great psychiatric program for new grads (the position I was interviewing for). Which leads me to believe it is very competitive. It is my dream to learn in grow in the facility, they have the best orientation program (lasting a year including classroom instruction).

Is there any chance I didn't just blow this opportunity? :crying2:

do not bring it up in the interview. If someone else does, then say you are sorry for any inconvenience, then let it go. The more you talk the more immature you will sound. Focus on the positives!!

I believe everything happens for a reason. You were granted a second chance. You have already explained to the recruiter what happened. I would not bring it up with the interviewer(they may not be aware of it). If you are asked about it then I would elaborate on it.

Thank you everyone for their support! I feel so much better. I'm preparing myself for a confident and impressive interview. As well as passing this NCLEX exam in about 36 hours! :D

All of this stress will be over soon!

I just got in touch with the nurse recruiter and they rescheduled me! What does everyone think? Will my chances be lessoned when being considered for a job, even though I have been politely rescheduled?

Things happen. They resecheduled you so they must still be interested in you. I am willing to bet that you are not the first to misdate an interview nor will you be the last.

Psych tends to be more casual so I wasn't surprised by your recruiter wearing jeans.

Thank you very much for your comments! I really think I have a chance with this second employer. I praise them every chance I get, remind them that they are my dream. They are definitely one of the most elite hospitals in the nation. Would it not downplay them just a little if I told them to I needed a prompt decision so I could give the other employer a yes or a no?

I would not tell the rescheduled interviewer about needing an answer because of a prospective job offer. You mentioned you have NCLEX in two days. Could you postpone that and take the test two weeks later? Two reasons:This situation about the two possibilities may take away from your concentration. Second, the job you mentioned you would be a charge nurse in one week, mention to them that you decided you needed more time to prepare for the NCLEX. Thus, buying you more time to decide between the two.

I have heard they can take weeks to decide. If they rescheduled my interview two weeks later, does that mean the weeks in between are full of people interviewing for the same position?!

Not necessarily. HR could be interviewing only certain days of the week, all different positions.

And how do I post pone the other position? Should I be honest? I mean I'm sure I can fill a couple days with shadow days so I can get a feel for the position, but this facility isn't used to giving shadow days for people who are not hired.. they are that small.

You could tell them you changed your mind and want to take NCLEX in 2-3 weeks or ask them when did they need the position filled? I wouldn't tell either potential employer you are considering other offers. They may not think you'll be around long if you were hired.

How long is too long to ask an employer to hold an offer. I'm not even sure if they have any other prospective nurses, because I'm a new grad and they have a week long orientation program and they want me to fill a charge nurse position, and they offered the job within an hour of the interview.

Sounds like a week long orientation is not near enough time. A new grad needs more time with a preceptor.

I'm torn!

Good luck with what you decide. I know how stressful this can be. I take my NCLEX on July 3 and job searching and interviews are nerve wracking!!!

So sorry! This post all ran together. You can see I'm a newbie. I had a different screen name before graduation and decided to change my name. You can see I only posted under this new name once!! ha ha

Here is a reply to your message. I was trying to put them after what you wrote:

This is a nighmare I have had many times...and not being able to find my locker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I have the strangest dreams)

Good luck on the NCLEX-let us know what happens:flwrhrts:

Good luck with the NCLEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You 2 will nail it!!!! College grad: I hope that you receive the job that you desire... As other posters have mentioned... I wouln't gush, or mention the missed interview, or mention that you have another job offer, so you would need a quick answer.... It will all work out, just as it is supposed to.

TAKE CARE!!!! Keep us posted..

Glad you got the interview rescheduled! Hope I was wrong and this was meant to be for you! :yeah:

Just to let anyone who is wondering know, I got the job offer anyway!

I then had to choose between two jobs I really felt could be my dream jobs, both with incredibly different qualities. One had better pay, one had better hours; one had a better orientation, one had a faster advancement. One had a younger population; one had a variety of populations with a specific disorder.

Both in the specialty I love, both with great benefits and pay (no matter if one is a little more). In the end I went with the population of patients, orientation length, and opportunity to further my education.. I am officially a Johns Hopkins Nurse, with the patient population and new grad orientation/education of my dreams! Even after missing my interview I was able to reach this amazing opportunity.

This is my inspiration to all those who fear the future, don't take chances, or debate on whether to follow your dreams. I inspire everyone to go for the gold and don't let anyone stop you on your path to success!:redbeathe:heartbeat:redbeathe:heartbeat
