Nursing especially hospital nursing is a 24 hour a day 365 day a year job. Most people rotate major holidays. For instance if I work Thanksgiving I get christmas off but that means next year I have thanksgiving off and work christmas. Sure I could get an office job as a nurse and not have to work weekends or holidays. (has its perks)

The answer is simple - like the above poster stated - we are a 24/7, 365 job. My husband (high school teacher) has Monday off because of Columbus Day - hunh???

I work in the OR and get EVERY holiday off. So do clinic RN's.

You dont rotate your call in OR?

I was informed I would be working the next 3 major holidays, being the new hire, I have no problem with that, but I will want my time off after those days, and I will give no concessions.

We have a few "call hogs" that take all the call. But getting back to the issue of respect for medsurg nursing...most of the RN's I know spend 30+ minutes per shift of uncompensated time to catch up on charting. ALL the other hospital units pay overtime when things run long. Most unfair!!!

This year, like in years past I'm off Thanksgiving, which is my choice and working Xmas Day and New Years Day. All holidays must be covered, so someone works all the holidays that office workers don't.

One must understand that fully prior to accepting a job that's open 24/7/365.

I'm starting orientation in two weeks and my new nurse manager told me straight up that I should plan on working Christmas. I suspect I'll be working Thanksgiving or New Year's as well, but I honestly don't care. A lot of people in my family are nurses and Christmas has been "postponed" many times for the nurses in the fam who were working. I suppose Christmas will be on December 26 for me this year, and I'm sure it will be no less of a Christmas because of it! :redpinkhe
