Hiring manager offered position, HR said no and won't tell me why.

Im so confused and upset.

I've been a public health nurse for a year and 6 mos of cardiac pcu prior to that.

2 weeks ago I interviewed for a cardiac tele floor at ********, and it went wonderfully. The hiring manager gave me a tour of the entire unit and introduced me to almost every nurse. At the end of the tour/interview, she shook my hand and even gave me a hug and said, "Welcome to the team!"

She told me to wait and hear from the HR department. After almost 2 weeks of not hearing anything I gave the recruiter a call and she very rudely said that they would not be hiring me and that they hired another candidate instead. I explained how the manager that I interviewed with had offered me the position and that I was very confused and wondered if she could share what went wrong or why I was being denied the position (there were day and night positions available, btw). She said she couldn't say anything. Nothing about my references or what went wrong. Just that they weren't going to offer me the position, but could not tell me a single reason why. I called the hiring manager afterwards, since she had given me her cell phone number, and she could tell I was upset and said that she would call the recruiter herself because she really wanted to hire me but HR told her that she couldn't. She called me back about 5 mins later and told me that the recruiter said she couldn't tell her or myself why. I didn't authorize a background check or anything (not that anything is on it anyways). All of my references checked out because I called each and every one of them and all gave glowing references.

I'm so confused and upset. Has anyone else had an experience like this or have any feedback?

Happy nurses week to me. :(

Thank you for any input.

That is so disheartening! I am sorry you experienced that. Unfortunately, no one warns us in school about the politics of our profession. Try to put it behind you.

Thank you so much! :) It just wasn't meant to be.

I have had good interviews where I was practically promised a job by the NM, but then no offer came. I was never in a bad enough situation to contact HR about why I did not get the job--i.e., I already had a job, I had not gotten an apartment in the new city, etc.

This is just a guess, but my money is on the idea that they got a late internal applicant. In addition, the NM jumped the gun by "offering" a job, and she may have been covering her own rear by claiming ignorance.

I do already have a job (they know I'm looking to get back into the hospital and are completely fine with keeping me employed while I try) but I did apply for an apartment in the new city (which is only 30 mins away anyways) since my lease is about to be up anyways. So thankfully I'm not without a job, just frustrating trying to get back into the hospital after doing public health, plus being really excited that I thought I had the job lol. Oh well.

That is probably what happened though.

nursing is a small world. Maybe someone knew someone who worked with you or went to school with you, who for whatever reason said something negative. It happen all the time. Just keep your chin up, the right job will come along!

I went to school in another city and am pretty new to the area so I don't think that was it. Nothing negative to say about me honestly, at least that I can think of lol! Relatively new to the state. Oh well, thanks!

You could get one, could you not?

Yes lol...

You could get one, could you not?

I've also just spent $450 on nursing licenses (multi-state and CA), so it's getting a bit tight when you're in public health in Florida lol.

That could very well be, you're right. It was just all so confusing/shocking and very disheartening. I wish I wouldn't have applied for a new apartment and spent a few hundred bucks on it haha. I guess it's my fault and I should have known better, but being a newer nurse, I did not.

That is a hard lesson to learn, but hopefully it will be one that you only have to learn once.

Also a thought - anything on social media/google that could have turned them off? With you so freely and carelessly offering up the hospital name to this site, perhaps your social media posts/comments have mirrored that attitude as well? Something to consider in today's social media-driven world.

Really? So carelessly? I'm not on social media... thanks
