I have decided to start a thread for HCC future nurses that are applying for class beginning 2015 of spring. I would like us all to be able to share and relate to one another, while experiencing this exciting moment. I know it may seem a little early but better sooner then later. This will be my last semester before I can apply to the program. I am registered to take micro with lab and humanities fall 2014. I will be able to submit my application in right after my grades are posted. The deadline for the 2015 spring class is June 1st if I am not mistaken. How is everyone else holding up?
Yeah, September is decision time, for sure. Don't even bother checking your mailbox during the summer. :)Tuition is based on HCC's rates, whatever they are. Don't know the number off the top of my head. Financial Aid, I can't tell you-- I never enrolled.
Speech and the computer class would be required for graduation if it was an AA, but since it's an AS, they aren't. However if you want to go to BSN-land one day you'll probably have to take them at some point. This is where the summer breaks from HCC's Nursing program come into play. A perk right there. ^_^
Very nice, ok so its all set. Ill take spanish this summer and speech and computer and spanish 2 in the fall the nursing starts spring so in the summer I should be good to relax because all my classes are done for my A.A. I may not even need an A.A. for the program I want. I want to enter in the RN-MSN at USF requirements only eng 1 and 2 and have a 3.5 gpa. And hold a current RN license. But I may have to check with USF if a foreign language is required to graduate. But im thinking of doing it anyways because a second language looks great on job applications
Hello! Thanks for creating this thread! I am also on my last semester of pre-reqs taking micro lab and lecture currently and applying as well close to the deadline to hopefully start Spring 2015!!!
Thats great! What campus are u on! We had our first micro test the week before last and I did great! Im so happy.. maybe if we are at the same campus we can do a study group.. help eachother out.. isnt this exciting! Our last semester! Cant wait... welcome to the group
Hi Guys/Gals:
I'm a current NP1 student at Dale Mabry, and just wanted to offer a word of encouragement to all of you to keep up the good fight. I know its not an easy road to go on, but hang in there.
Word of advice: keep your thread going and get to know your fellow cohort. The waiting period after dropping off your application messes with your mind, and having people to bounce concerns off of is indispensable.
Take care and good luck!

Thank you dropping in! Its always nice to see new names come through... I am excited yes and am so tired at the same time. This is my 4th year at HCC just doing prerequisites, I have been taking my time with classes.. and I work and have 3 kids . So once the program starts I plan to work only 20 hrs a week. How do u like class so far? What is it like? Have u started clinicals?

I've got a little one as well; it definitely adds another dimension to school doesn't it?
I love the program. While orientation was a little chaotic (as was all the preparation beforehand), the actual nitty-gritty seems thoughtfully laid out and for the most part well executed. I'm glad I stuck with my guns to go to HCC rather than USF -- the program is very much more conducive to learning with 28 people opposed to 75+.
I wouldn't say the material is hard, but the absolute sheer vast amount of information is almost at times overwhelming! It has literally been non-stop since we started the program in January for the most part. We're on our fourth test, and I can't think of any of my classmates that haven't been stressed out. I've personally already had one (what I would term) nervous breakdown and not all that fun.
Our first and second test were a week apart (the first being clinical calculations). The material consisted of 10+ chapters and around 300-350 pages of text. This isn't your normal textbook either; it is very technical and you can't skim most of it. Additionally, there are skills at the back of most chapters detailing how to provide a certain aspect of care to the patient.
With all that being said, I could not have progressed as far as I have without the support of my nursing cohort. All of my classmates (both at DM and other campuses) have been nothing but supportive and helpful. When people tell you that these people become "family", it really isn't too far of an exaggeration! Don't be surprised if your family and friends think you’re odd for 'talking nurse' -- only your fellow classmates and other nurses will get the unique humor and intricacies.
It's odd
As of this last week we have all provided direct care to patients by this point. Your first four weeks or so are spent in the classroom practicing on simulation dummies while you master basic tasks (i.e. transport, assessment, bathing, injections, etc.). Your first actual day in the hospital after orientation at your particular facility will basically be shadowing a PCT/CNA and doing task such as bathing, blood glucose monitoring, telemetry pad placement, making beds and the like. But even with that, you will most likely be performing your first assessment on a patient as well as obtaining a health history.
Point of advice: start learning your clinical calculations now. Either get the "Medical Calculations for Dummies" book or the one recommended by HCC. Practice in your spare time or at least learn imperial to metric conversions and medical abbreviations. You'll be glad you did later on! To be able to pass meds and to continue in the program past the first few weeks, you'll need to pass your Clinical Calculations test with an 80% or above.
Hope this helps... if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to PM me via the site. When my cohort was at this stage, we had a few people give us advice and it was invaluable. I'm paying it forward (and still totally learning)!
BTW - Gradius: If you are the same individual, I remember reading your posts last summer and spring in a prior thread. I wanted to say good luck this time around. Your experiences marked me and still stick out in my mind. All the best.
:) Thank you, very kind of you to say. ^_^ Yes that's me. I don't know precisely if I said anything helpful but if it aided you in some way then I am glad.
Anyway, Nursing school is on hold for me until Fall 2015 at least due to currently being in a non-Nursing Masters program, but I'm eager to apply again when the time comes. I believe it will be a fantastic experience. :)

And you will be able to ease your class of worries while they wait for the news.. u can help them out like u help us
Hi! Thank you for making this thread! I am also planning to apply for the nursing program after this semester for the spring 2015. I am looking forward to share information with all of you![/quote']Welcome! Its always nice being able to have another pre nursing student. Are u planning on going to USF after you graduate HCC? I just came from advisory and I was informed if I want to transfer to usf for my bachelor's, I have to also have an AA degree... does anyone know if this is true?
