Hillsborough Community College - Spring 2014

Published

Hello all,

I wanted to start a thread for those applying to HCC's Spring 2014 nursing program. I am a stay at home mom. I know its early but I wanted to get as much info as possible. The deadline isn't until 6/1. I'm a current HCC student. My pre-req GPA is 3.57 (all A's 1 B and 1 C ), I'm hoping that this is good enough to get me a spot in the program.

What is everyone elses GPA? I heard its lower for the Spring.

Interesting article from 'Scrubs' Magazine: "50 Things Every Student Nurse Should Know"

Just some interesting reading for a Friday evening. Have a good weekend all!

thanks

I think some of the books come with a code already....in the book package from the bookstore.

Im going to get both also. I think i read on another post that the ebook access codes are included with the package. I also asked Santa for a new Ipad for Christmas so i can use it in class instead of carrying all those books around, at home i like to use real books.

just want to share something with my guys..

Ugh. I got a little something stuck in my eye now..

This is an awesome reminder that it's not all about me and becoming a nurse; that ultimately it is about the people I will eventually help. My motivation should not be about grades, rather to help them with the best of my ability which comes through hard-work and study.

Thanks Cindy!

I've used my Kindle FireHD now for three semesters with textbooks. There are aspects that I really enjoy about it (highlighting, quick search, TOC right at your fingertips, notes on pages) and some that I really don't. I've found that in core classes such as A&P and Micro (in particular), I enjoy flipping through the physical pages to either refresh my memory or to re-enforce something I've learned in another class.

In the current CHM-1032 class that FX, Rosaly, and I take my text is on the KindleHD as a PDF and I paid less than half than the physical would cost me. However, I knew this class had a bearing on my nursing career but it wasn't a complete focus like A&P or Micro was.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm a total geek; and my prior career was software development and emergent technology. I'm always the dude that adopts stuff early because it's new tech. But with something as close to my heart as nursing, I think I'm going to go with physical for my text in those classes. The reason being, formats change (such as PDF, OpenDocument, and XPS) but paper will always be readable when I need it, and I am quite sure that I will be referring back to them.

Now, I will say that if the online component of my textbooks offer an e-book format I will most definately use it in conjunction with the physical book. It makes no sense not too. If it wasn't for the online portion of my A&P book (MasteringAandP | Pearson), I might not have passed both A&P I and II with an "A". The visuals of all the organs and physiological processes was too much not to pass up. Not to mention they included practice tests for all the chapters and audio guides that I could listen too while at the gym or driving to class.

I can only hope I'm that lucky for our Fundamentals and Med/Surg text..

Has anyone started purchasing any equipment/supplies for the nursing program yet? I just opened my new Littmann Cardiology III stethoscope my wife got me for my B-Day. Im going to start checking out the uniforms next to see what works best, so far I like what i see in the CHEROKEE WORKWEAR. I've noticed alot of current nursing students wearing CHEROKEE WORKWEAR, must be the popular brand.

I've got my stethoscope (Littman as well) and a set of scrubs. That's it so far. I'll probably wait for most everything else. Shoes are probably next -- I'm looking at Sketchers Nursing shoes for dudes.

nothing here yet, I'm probably too busy, but a friend of mine (an RN) gave some books: med-surg nursing, a guide to diagnosis and a drug's guide, oh, I'm already reading a little bit, very interesting!!

hi DCrux, where is the list for necessary stuff?? and where did you buy these??...from the school or anywhere?

There is a list in the Health Sciences Manual / Uniform Guidelines, also Rosaly and another poster from last semester has given a pretty decent list on this thread. I just woke up (and need more coffee) or I'd find the specific post #. ;)

thanks DCrux...I'll find it...this will help me in this case....

I got a stethoscope, shoes, pen light, bandage scissors and a few reference books. I'm going to Uniform City to try on some scrubs. Someone told me they were cheaper there than the other uniform shops.

Okay...lets see now....How much is it going to cost me in uniforms and supplies before we even start the program? Uniforms $150, Stethoscope $140, shoes $70, pen light $5, scissors $5, Tax $30, and finally the Nursing Book Package $611, Total = $1011, and that does'nt include any of the vacination shots since my insurance covered that. Also,I still want to get a new Ipad to use in class so thats another $500 or $600 depending on the model i decide to get. Then there is that thing called tuition that needs to be paid before class starts thats another $1100, for a GRAND TOTAL of $2700 before day 1 of NP1. Just wanted to share my pain with everyone..:)
