Hillsborough Community College - Spring 2014

Published

Hello all,

I wanted to start a thread for those applying to HCC's Spring 2014 nursing program. I am a stay at home mom. I know its early but I wanted to get as much info as possible. The deadline isn't until 6/1. I'm a current HCC student. My pre-req GPA is 3.57 (all A's 1 B and 1 C ), I'm hoping that this is good enough to get me a spot in the program.

What is everyone elses GPA? I heard its lower for the Spring.

The email said second week of October & I called this lady in admissions who said there were a lot of applicants. Sorry for the choppiness of my posts kind if busy but wanted to let you all know.

Interesting.

Whelp; it would have been nice for the school to have sent out an e-mail saying: "Hey, I know ya'll are waiting on pins and needles and it sucks, but if you could just hang on for another week -- we've ran into some technical problems -- that would be great."

But of course that would be logical...:sarcastic:

The wait continues.

Appreciate you letting us know, was just curious bc usually they have a standard reply saying end of sept/ beginning of oct and don't release any additional information.

Lol that would be asking for too much. I guess we all should find something to keep our minds occupied for atleast another few weeks.

Apparently this semester had so many applicants & everyone was pretty close in terms of GPA that it's taking until no later than the second week of October for everyone to know their status.

Seems like this semester will be very competitive, good luck all! Probably means the cutoff will be a lot higher this time around(shaking in my boots)

Yeah I was tempted to ask "well you guys couldn't just let us know that??" But I didn't want to get rude & have them throw out my application lol & yes I think the cutoff will be higher but at the same time a lot of people will decline their spot due to them starting other programs or the campus they are assigned to is too far, etc...

okay, If that's true then the old theory that the cut-off for Spring class is always lower no longer applies. I wonder how many applicants they have this semester? 300? 400? >500? If im correct there are only about 130 open slots per semester. I think the cut-off GPA is going to surprise alot of people this semester, maybe around 3.6 or 3.7. Good Luck everyone.....

Ughh this is driving me crazy. This is my 3rd attempt to apply for this program. My GPA is low at 3.476. My C in Eng II 10 years ago is killing my GPA. I wish they took into account whether people had other Gen-eds to take. I heard of people dropping mid program because they couldn't handle the course load coupled with their gen-eds. I've been at HCC for 10 years (I have my AA and also an AS in different fields). I had a friend get in as an alternate for Fall 2013 who had a lower pre-req GPA than I did...Even if I tied with someone and they had a higher cumulative GPA you would think I would of still gotten in as an alternate rather than my friend...This will be my last attempt, then I'll try Erwin for my LPN and bridge over later...It's so frustrating! Good luck to everyone.

Hopefully 3 is a charm for you and you make it in this semester, if not then I would suggest going the LPN rout first then transition into the RN program at HCC. From what I was told, its much easier getting in with the LPN to RN program at HCC and its much faster, 3 consecutive semesters and you're done. Good Luck to you.....

Just got my mail and "NO LETTER", just the normal bills that I don't want...:-( Maybe they will be here for my B-Day on Thursday...:-)

Well we never really know what is going to happen until it happens. Hopefully they take other factors into consideration other than just solely GPA. I know other schools do such as PHCC & State College of Florida.

Hi All:

Long post incoming! Run if you're tired or need more coffee...

With all this uncertainty and quiet about our acceptance letters, I’ve become somewhat more confused about what I might want to pursue in the nursing or clinician space. My only motivation in writing this is to possibly find like-minded individuals that have either explored other options or are in the process of doing so. If this whole thing is TL;DR, please feel free to skip with no hard feelings!

A little background as to where I have been through all of this...

My long-term goal is to become either a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHN), an Adult Oncology Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP), or a Physician Assistant (PA). Towards this goal, I applied months ago to the programs at USF, UT, UCF, and HCC for the upcoming spring 2014 semester for the BSN program(s) and the ADN program at HCC respectively. All of the schools acceptance letters are due back to me around the same time (however I had expected HCC's answer by this point to be completely honest).

In the meantime, USF is still figuring out their Physician Assistant program, but has initial approval and a plan for proceeding by 2015 as long as enrollment numbers are what they expect (USF Health News » New Physician Assistant program director aims for 2015 start for students). I’ve placed my name on the waiting list should this come to fruition.

While all of this was transpiring, I completed all the requirements to be able to take the MCAT test (Medical College Admission Test - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) about five months ago as a challenge to myself. My score was respectable and was in the range for entrance into many schools – something that actually surprised me. Which is why I wonder why I struggle with my CHM-1032 class, but I digress...

My question is this…

Is anyone else considering similar options? I’m not going to be bummed in the slightest if I get into HCC’s program and transition into the BSN at USF later. This was my original and current plan (and I've been told by many people HCC's program is one of the most superior in the state). However, I’ve found this process with HCC to be rather convoluted and unnecessary, and to say it has left a bad taste in my mouth is somewhat of an understatement. This is coming after my awesome experience with HCC for the last three years!

Anyhow; is there anyone in the same situation or currently going through the same considerations? If so, please send me a private message here or via e-mail contact through AN.

Back to your regularly scheduled program and sorry for the long freaking post.
