Hillsborough Community College - Spring 2014

U.S.A. Florida

Hello all,

I wanted to start a thread for those applying to HCC's Spring 2014 nursing program. I am a stay at home mom. I know its early but I wanted to get as much info as possible. The deadline isn't until 6/1. I'm a current HCC student. My pre-req GPA is 3.57 (all A's 1 B and 1 C ), I'm hoping that this is good enough to get me a spot in the program.

What is everyone elses GPA? I heard its lower for the Spring.

My mail came....No letter :nailbiting::no:

oh no! darn, well thanks for letting us know!

Still waiting for my mail guy..

Nothing today either...got more junk mail that's about it. :(

wow, I'm speechless...

So today I had an amazing conversation with two women who have been nurses for 49 years!. They are inspirational women, and very knowledgeable. I did get a little scared but at least I know what awaits on this road ahead.

I bet that was interesting! I can imagine they had tons of stories about interesting and harrowing experiences in those 49 years. I always like listening to people's life stories and the ways things have changed.

I'm beginning to think that the estimate of mid-October might not be too far off from the mark at this point. I've kinda given up and just tried to keep myself occupied the best way that I can.

Same here,no more letter checking for me. When someone tells me it's arrived, ill get it but for now my mind is focused on other things.

Specializes in Alzheimer's and dementia; long-term care.

Agreed! Enough obsessing all day. When i start seeing "IM IN" then ill check. I hope we all get in together...

Hi all, IM IN!!!!............... my office doing homework...:-).. Keep your heads up, soom we will all get together for a cup of coffee/ Capt & Coke and laugh about this madness....

God I hope so. You and FX have been so awesome to bounce ideas off of and to just commiserate through all of this. I can't even imagine how $#@! I would have been if I would have taken Organic Chem at USF this semester as I had planned too (see my prior postings on this thread) instead of Mr. "Yes or Nooooo". To boot, I got two people that are going through the same cruddo! Holy crap Batman would I have been lost... I can't even comprehend some of the concepts we're going through in CHM-1032. I was kind of arrogant for thinking I could have survived! Not to mention everyone else in this thread that have contributed their stories!

My prior life in Software Dev. was never so intense!

Thanks for being there...

Yay for Saturday. How do you like the program so far? I can imagine it's a total roller-coaster; knowing that, I still wanna be the first in line with my barf bag! :bored:

Hello there, I do like the program so far, but as you would expect it's a LOT of work! And I am not even talking about the program itself, the hard work starts even as early as after the orientation ends. You have a lot of paperwork to turn in and they don't make it easy. HCC uses a website for you to turn in your paperwork, vaccination records and etc called certifiedbackground, and they are a pain to deal with, they kept on rejecting my records for no reason, Anyways....

The program itself it's nothing like you have ever experienced before, it's very different than regular classes. It's very challenging, time consuming, but is also very rewarding at the same time.

The exams are pretty hard, you have to get used to NCLEX type questions. Which means, you can read the entire book and memorize it, but if you can't apply the material to real life scenarios, you pretty much fail

The calculation exam it's not too hard ( believe me I am terrible at math and I passed on my first try) but, having said that, you are pretty much on your own and the professor does not have time to go over in class. So, I would try to learn it before class even starts! I did not know this information before class started, so it pretty much consumed my life trying to keep up with the readings, homework, study for the class exam, and trying to study for the calculation exam at the same time.

Clinical days: Its very overwhelming in the beginning (at least for me because I had never worked as a CNA before) so pretty much we watched videos about bed bathing and etc, we "practiced" on ourselves, we had to go to the hospital and on the first day, we were assigned patients without shadowing anyone. And, every week you learn something new!

So, this has been so far my experience with nursing school :nurse: But like I said, I really like the program!!

I hope to see some of you next semester (those of you going to SS)!!!

Awesome! I hope I get the chance to see how well I can do in the program. Thanks for letting us know your experience so far!
