Hello all HCC Fall 2011 hopefuls! I have been following the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 threads and thought maybe it was time to start Fall 2011 now that the application process has started.
I just turned my application in this past week and received my confirmation notice in the mail. Anyone else out there that has turned in their application?
What are your plans over the next 8 months to prepare for the first semester (provided we get in)?
SandM55,
There is always hope!! I applied for the spring term. It is a very hard program, I am not going to sugar coat it. It isn't the most organized but maybe they will be better when you get there. I would say as far as intensity compared to the pre-reqs is higher. I would say I spent anywhere from 15-20 hours a week dealing with something related to school. However even through this I worked full time + hours and went to school at night and on the weekends for clinicals. It is doable!! Just dedication and focus is all that you need and an understanding support system lol :)
:)
Babynurse- everyone says the same thing in regards to the intensity and time required. Is the work hard and textbook and teaches hard to understand or was it the amount of time and workload that was required the most difficult? I have two small kids both 4 years old and my husband has two jobs and is gone all the time so finding time to study was often an issue as I was always drained by the end of the night after a full day with them. I always tried to study at night when I was mentally and physically fried, however, I managed to maintain mostly A's and a couple B's but it was tough even with the pre req's alone. After getting into the groove of nursing school, is it pretty predictable as to what can be expected each week or does it constantly change through each semester? When you say it was unorganized, what do you mean and did that affect your learning? I know you mentioned you had a 3.23 going in, but what kind of grades did you get while in the program? I just heard that they have a high percentage of those that don't make it past the first semester and that a certain grade is required in order to stay in the program..so getting in doesn't mean staying in. Sorry for all of the questions, but I just Want to prepare and know what to expect so that if and when I get in, I won't be as overwhelmed. Thanks for taking the time! :):)
Hi Sandm55,
I asked some of the same questions on another thread and got some answers you may be interested in. There was a lot of back and forth, so I'm just posting the link below instead of cutting and pasting the responses. I found the information very helpful, hope you do too.
Hillsborough Community College Fall 2010 - Page 66- Nursing for Nurses
I like some of your questions though, so I hope babynurse responds too.
I think what was most difficult was trying to understand how to apply this large amount of information to your exams. I can't stress enough get a NCLEX book and go over the questions!! Review the rationales for the wrong and right answers. Your teachers can vary, I have had some that are very knowledgable and others who read from the powerpoint and you pretty much have to teach yourself the information. As far as finding time to study, I have no kids but like I said I do work and my fiance works too so I simply took over our coffee table and at least I was in there with him. My best friend had 3 kids the youngest being 3 months when she started nursing and she said she simply pushed herself to stay awake at night when they were in bed, if her husband or mom was home she would go to the library to read at any chance she got. With the program it is just like anything. You have some who are more organized and have things together others are all disorganized anywhere from the syllabus to teaching, as well as administration. That is all, it is more frustrating than anything else. I am the type who needs laid out on a schedule and we follow that schedule so I think that is why I saw it more disorganized. Grades: NP1- A, NP2- B, NP3- B in Pedi, OB, & Psych, and NP4- 89.4% Lol, I got A-C's in the pre-reqs, I simply wasn't as focused then as I have become. Out of my evening class I had 1 person drop the 2nd day of NP1 I had one drop because she got pregnant in Np2, and one who transferred to days. So out of the 35 we started with we graduated with 32. It is a lot I know but if you have the passion then anything is possible! Hope that is helpful!!!!:redbeathe
Thanks SLA, I will check that out. Babynurse- thanks 4 responses. It all definitely makes sense and I will keep everything in mind. I'm assuming you want to work in neonatal or maternity ward? That's my first choice and first reasons why I wanted to become a nurse, but, I'd be happy with whatever I could get to start off. Hope you get the position you want.
Hello everyone.. I will be giving in my application next week. I'm still waiting for my transcript from PHCC, where I took mostly all my pre reqs. I'm concerned because I have a C for Eng and Soc. I wish I would had been more focus in school when I was younger. I hope that won't affect me to get into the program. In the thread for the fall 2010 they received their acceptance letter by the 1st week of March.
Oh, good to know about the acceptance letter coming in March! I didn't expect it would be that soon. I've been meaning to go through that thread completely and seen when people received their letters but it is such a long tread and I haven't had the time the last couple of weeks. Thanks for letting us know!
Good luck!
Hi Love78,
I'm also concerned because I have one C in sociology from years ago. I don't know what's up with that. I thought sociology is supposed to be an easy class...way easier than anatomy and physiology and microbiology. I got better grades in those classes than I did in sociology! Lol! But, I guess you are right about being focused. I wasn't very focused when I was younger either. Just pray about getting in. Expect the worst and hope for the best :). That's what I will do because there isn't much else we can do about it now. The fall I hear is more competitive than the spring. I also applied at St. Pete college. If I don't get in to either, I'll just work as a CNA and apply again in the spring. In regards to hearing whether we are accepted, I was told by"MF" that the nursing committee will meet and we will find out some time in April. Good luck to you!
Hello Sandm55, I'm upset I didn't do well in Eng and Soc, but I'm still hopeful. I'm not sure what is my prereq GPA , I have to wait for HCC to receive my transcript.
I was going to apply to St. Pete College but got discourage when I went to apply and the admission person told me that the school gives priority to Pinella residents and I should think about it before applying. I live in Temple Terrace so I'm not sure if I should apply. What you think? They have my application all I have to do is the online orientation and give them my transcript.
Love78,
Don't listen to the admissions person, if you are interested in the St. Pete program, then apply! All they can do is say no. I know Pasco also gives priority to Pasco Co residents but I'm sure both programs have students from outside their county.
I say apply to both (and any other) programs and increase your chances.
Good luck!

SLA 2011- the first time I dropped college algebra was in 2001 and the second time was the beginning of this year. Then I took it at the end of this year and got an A but was told 0.2 would be deducted. Sucks but I didn't know until after I dropped it.
