Hillsborough Community College Fall 2010

Published

hello! i just joined this lovely and informative site after lurking for a few weeks. i'm planning to apply for the program after this fall semester. (need to finish a&pII and college algebra).

who else?! :)

edit: can someone walk me through the application process? i know it's pretty easy, but i like knowing 100%! i'm not sure if an adviser would help me much. i know you need high school transcripts, an hcc application and a nursing application. then you just gather all the papers (including money?) in like a.... manila envelope and mail away? or can you electronically send your high school transcripts to them? thank you.

hey guys...

we are all going to be just fine...i just feel it in my bones. i wanted to share what mf wrote about the whole pass/fail english thing (for squeen)...and the basement gpa from spring 2010 (for everyone!) i hope this helps...and hang in there!!!

tebyrd, yes...you have a 3.57. and they will not accept statistics as the math anymore, so they will use your college algebra grade.

here is a portion of the e-mail (from dec. 3rd) from mf herself:

[color=#17365d]"thank you for your email and inquiry. as long as we have an official transcript providing evidence that the english 1101 was completed and you passed it will a letter grade, even if it is a p for passing, we will accept it. however, it cannot be calculated with the other letter grades. therefore, it will be calculated manually, and instead of 21 credits it will be only 18 credits being calculated.

[color=#17365d]the current cut-off for spring 2010 is 3.190. "

Squeen...just to clarify, my English was taken Pass/Fail (It was the only way they offered it at the time). I don't know if they would do anything differently for you since it was AP, but I thought I would share the specifics of the e-mail. It is simply NOT FAIR to do it this way, because it really amplifies the impact of any other grades that are not an "A". I mentioned it to her in a response to her e-mail...but I don't see them changing it any time soon enough to benefit US.

ALSO...BTW...I think I remember the 3.19 GPA being that of an ALTERNATE that ended up getting in. I remember this from the numerous hours studying the threads from Spring 2010 on here...can't bear to go back and look it up again. BUT...it was definitely the basement...directly from the mouth (e-mail) of MF.

Talk to you soon! It WILL be okay.

Thank you so much for this information! I think knowing that the lowest was 3.19 is going to help me sleep a little better at night. It's the wait that's killing me!

I still would like an answer from her though. I'm sure she's getting 5 million emails a day, but it would only make sense to accept it, since they would accept a higher math if college algebra wasn't taken. I am such a worrier!!! I wish I had a time machine, so I wouldn't have to worry like this every second of the day lol.

Thank you Nick!!! Question for all: any reason to believe there's a larger pool of applicants for the fall as opposed to the spring?

Squeen...glad to help! The wait is painful, I know...I have two children (ages 5 and 7), so they are HUGE distractions. So, if you need some distraction come right on over to our house : ).

I have had to just try to turn it over... I start to get myself all worked up, thinking about the "what if's?" and then I make myself realize that IF this is meant to be for me...than it WILL be. There is nothing that any of us can do at this point, except for wait, and that is the part that totally STINKS!! But it WILL be worth it. AND...I have heard that once you DO get IN... you look back at certain times and think "WHAT HAVE I GOTTEN MYSELF INTO!!????"

Hang in there...and know that you are NOT alone.

Take care!

Yes, Tebyrd... I HAVE heard that there is usually a larger pool for Fall start, but don't really know what logic was behind it.

My apartment is practically immaculate now. I have been cleaning non-stop to keep myself distracted! I do have 2 little doggies to take care of to help me too.

Nick, I completely agree with you. I have been through a great deal, and I totally feel that I was lead here. I honestly believe that a path was laid out for me (as corny as that sounds), and I'm trying to keep the faith and not worry too much!!!

Hi all, thanks so much for all the updates....now i feel even more sick. I was told by my advisor that they would take the higher math even if you took college alegeba....if i was given incorrect advice i dont know what i will do!

SQUEEN you said that they would use the higher math IF college alegebra was not taken? If they use my college alegebra my gpa is like a 3.42 if they use my higher math it is a 3.57. That is a huge deal...i dont think that if i was told differently that i would have chosen this route to become a nurse. I felt confident that 3.57 would get me in but now that i am not sure about the math thing......or what my gpa really is; i feel like crying.

Well, I was reading the manual for all the health sciences, and it's extremely vague. I read that a higher math will be accepted (but not statistics). It didn't specify in what situation they would take it. I assume that they would accept a higher math if college algebra wasn't taken at all (since you do need a math as a prereq). I'm not sure how it goes if you have taken college algebra and higher maths (which was not mentioned at all). I have taken up to precalc/trig, and the advisor used my college algebra grade, BUT they also used my english II grade since I had no english I. This confuses me even more because the manual didn't say anything about accepting other higher classes besides math, and I haven't heard any word back from my email.

I have no idea how they do it! I would take the best of the maths if I was doing it. That just makes the most sense to me...

OK, to quote the manual:

Course substitutions. For most programs, if a student has taken a higher level math than the math required for the specific program, that course may be used for the required course. However, there are certain programs that require a specific math course and a higher level math cannot be substituted for the required course. Refer to the specific program eligibility criteria in this handbook to determine whether or not a higher level math or statistics course can be applied instead of the required course.

If a student has taken a higher level science than the science required for the specific program, the student should meet with an academic advisor or counselor to determine whether or not a course substitution is appropriate.

Do not assume that a higher level math or science course will automatically substitute for the required course. All course substitutions must be resolved prior to the health sciences deadline date for admissions.

Under nursing "Any transferable General Education math (No statistics course will be accepted)". It no longer lists MAC1105 (that is the minimum required now, they upped it).

Sooooo, I am still lost, but I hope it helps a little. There is always appeals though, trust me I would argue til I was blue in the face. Let's hope neither of us have to resort to that though!!!

Based on Nick's email it sounds like College Algebra no matter what, no? Maybe I need to refer back to it. As for the larger Fall pool maybe since more people enter school in the Fall rather than the spring more would finish pre-reqs to apply on the same fall schedule maybe. Just throwing something out there. Wish all those anxiety was having a good impact on my weight, lol.

I bet you will both be fine, either way, and I am banking on myself being fine, too, but if NOT they will surely have some serious appeal cases to deal with! I am not trying to worry either of you...but if MF specifically told me that they would not take ANY of my higher English classes (I had THREE to choose from) to use for the GPA calculations, I don't understand how/why they would use a higher math, etc. for that purpose. But seriously guys...we are all going to be FINE!!!

I have a vision...and it is a basement GPA of...3.2

Try to stay positive...and start studying Pharmacology!! I have a couple of friends in different nursing programs NOW, and they are saying that studying the drugs is seriously VERY time consuming. I bought a set of Pharmacology flash cards TODAY...and it is kinda fun. (Because I know that I am not going to be tested on any of it any time soon!)

Hang in there!!
