Student nurse here. The grading policy for our COLLEGE is 90-100 A, 80-90 B, etc. However, the grading policy in our nursing classes hold us to a higher standard 93-100A, 85-92 B, and I was just wondering if that was a common thing at other colleges. A student made the comment to me the other day that if she didn't pass this semester she was going to another school close by that had a less strict policy. :uhoh3:

Exact same situation as my college. I think it's common for nursing schools to have such a policy.

Yeah, at my school we have the same grading policy as you mentioned, with a 77 being the absolute lowest you could get to pass. It was tough getting use to that and it also led to a lot of people failing out with 76.5 (or close), my school claims it is because it has to hold itself to higher standards which I can't help but agree with. When I had to start going through all the obstacles, it seemed unfair then I realized how important it is that you know what your doing. I wouldn't want someone being my nurse who passed with a 69%. Goodluck!!!!

It's the same at my school. Our nursing school is separate from our "parent university". There are 3 private universities here in town and the nursing students from each university goes to an intercollegiate nursing school. The grading policy is 93-100A, 85-92 B,etc. for both my nursing school and my parent university. It's the only system I've ever known in college. The other grading system with 90-100A, 80-90B, etc is what we used in high school.

The school I go to is the same way. Only difference is you need a 94 to get an A.

Ours is 78% to pass. They make a big deal out the fact that 77.99 is NOT passing. If you get higher than 78% on the tests your clinicals and assignments will be added to your grade, but lower than that, your test grade is your grade and your homework and clinical scores won't count. I guess no matter how well you do on clinicals, labs, and assignments if you don't test well, you're out :o.

This is very typical for nursing schools and as some are already pointing out, you don't have that bad of a deal! This is discussed often and many here have indicated that the lowest they can get is an 80%! 92-100 is an A for us, 83-91 a B and 75 to 82 is a C. 74.99? See ya...

94-100 A, 86-93 B and 80-85 C. If you get below an 80 your out! Sucks, but they say to pass the NCLEX you need an 85%. At least according to our instructors.

My school has the same grading school now. (With less than 80 being failing) They didn't two semesters ago where 90-100 was an A etc. They just changed it mid semester right before my senior year. Talk about an angry class! I could see the new classes having the new scale, but we thought we oughta be grandfathered in with the old grading scale.

And, the rest of my college is on the 10 point scale with less than 60 being passing. (Even the medical school!)

My nursing school grading system was 87 - 93 = B, and 94 - 100 = A.

I remember getting a final grade in one rotation that was a 86.5......I was given a "C". :o No favors there.

Yes, the grading system is tough! So, I knew that I had to get an 87 or better to feel good about myself. I was hard on myself when I got less than a "B". I sulked for days on end about that fraction of a point, but it made me work harder for the duration of the program. :)

Often times a C student nurse will make a better nurse than an A student. But I can tell you in my class there are several A students that couldnt find their *** with both hands. Yet there are several C students I think will finish the program and go on to be good nurses.

My school uses a different scale from the college where I had to take everything else. But they do round up 76.5% to 77%. On a test if you do a med math question and put your answer as 32.66 gtts/min instead of 33 gtts/min it would be counted wrong. You cant have it both ways. If an instructor counted my 32.66 wrong for not rounding up and then would not round up my 76.5% I would probably be in jail for throat punching them.

Another thing we have is that no matter what your other test scores are if you make 3 D's you are out of the program. So if you have 3 A's and 3 D's you are out. That only makes sense because half of the material you did not grasp. Granted I know that some people dont test well but they will have to overcome that to pass the NCLEX.

I never really viewed it as unfair, on the contrary I believe like some of you...I would want only the BEST working on me! In fact, now I think my institution is a little more lax than some. If we have a 77.5 they round it off to a 78% and you can pass. Good news though...they have a 98% first time pass rate for the NCLEX!!!! And thats what I care about! Thanks all! Good Luck!
