High School Career Day, any help with outline for presentation??

Published

I will be speaking at my daughter's career day in 2 weeks. The kids get to select two careers of interest and go to listen to two speakers. I get 35 minutes to speak, ugh, and 10 minute Q/A . I need help with an outline . If anyone has ever done this before I can use your help. I have some posters and phamplets coming from the discovernursing web site by Johnson & Johnson.

Thanks in advance.

Will you be representing RN's only or healthcare workers in general?

It might be a good idea to be able to tell the students about NA's, LPN's, etc, and how they participate in the nursing care team. Find out if any other parents in healthcare will be there (lab techs, dental hygenists, Xray techs). Because you might find out you will be representing the healthcare industry as a whole (or thats how the kids will see it). Found that out the hard way when husband did career day (he went to represent the Air Force, and the kids that showed up wanted info on all branches of the service, the police and the RCMP) he said it was one of his best days and one of those he really earned his pay day...:rotfl:

I'm only suggesting this because there are kids out there who want to work in hospitals but not as an RN, or they have heard about the waitlists for entry into nursing school.

My son knows about the waitlists and how he is going to have to pretty well ace his entire 11th and 12th grades to get into a nursing programe in his hometown. But he's even said to me he's not going to wait forever to go to nursing school and has a back up plan. I've read too many postings on this site about how some students will wait forever to go to school, or they feel that they deserved a place because of perfect marks, the reality is life is hard and we don't always get what we want or deserve.

I think I will be there as an RN representative but I was planning on mentioning stepping stones to becoming an RN and/or alternatives in healthcare such as LVN's, CNA, Resp. Therapist. EMT's, paramedics,

etc.

Competitive Salaries..ALways a Plus! 3 Day Work Weeks! You Really get to touch lives. Make it known that nurses don't just clean bed pans, they are part of a team. Healing, teaching, comforting, and always ACTION PACKED IVs, Coding, Aspirating, I duno whatever you think is fun. Comfy Scrubs all day! Tell them about NPs, Clin Specs, Managers etc. The Rewards from helping others! Hope this was some help, if you need some more input from a Highschooler EMAIL ME: [email protected]

:) I am a second semester freshman in nursing school. I have always had a passion for the medical field. In my highschool's career days we got to choose a couple speakers we wanted to hear. My advice is to start with a story and/or end with one. Real life expierence (with out breaching confidentiality of course) is most interesting.
