Oh my. I will take "puke on my shoes" all day every day over a kid on drugs.

But on the bright side....mine know their names, their meds, why they're taking the meds, and they never throw up on my shoes...
I am with my fellow elementary nurses! I will have my children recite meth-yl-phe-ni-date all day every day, even dodge puke (as I often do) if it means not encountering this.

However, my 5th graders are really teenagers in training so I am reluctantly going to prep myself for exceptions by reading up on what you all share!!

I've been very lucky when it comes to high students. I don't see very many at all in my high school population in a very high risk area. (::knocks on all the wood::) I have had students come and tell me about students at other schools doing [insert drug name here] at an outside dance or other event they attended and how they reacted to said situation (which usually makes me so proud!).

My state has a huge issue with opioid addiction. So despite not seeing many students taking them out, we do see parents, other family members, and friends of said students overdose way more often then I wish. And that is never easy and always tragic.

(Of course, drinking is a different story.)

My kiddos are only K-2, so thankfully I do not see them getting high, BUT some of the parents :smokin: Makes me really sad when a dad or mom comes to drop off or pick up and they reek of weed, wondering if they have been driving their child in the car. It makes me especially upset when I have kids talk about it like it is NBD. I had a first grader last year tell me "My asthma is bad today from the weed in my house". I asked "what is weed"? and she said "the stuff my dad smokes all the time :sorry: Another first grader told me about how her dad (recently out of prison) had locked himself in the bathroom to "smoke his weed" and that is why her parents were fighting this morning (and why she was in my office with a tummy ache). Really breaks my heart the things these kids are seeing and experiencing in their homes.

On a completely different note, but speaking of seeing terrible things, my own two kids like to play with the kids on our street. The mother definitely had some sort of addiction to something. I have smelled alcohol on her at all times and she has acted very strangely, out of it, sways, slurred speech :( He husband actually has a grow house somewhere a few towns away and smokes a lot. The kids are lovely kids and my kids enjoy them so I tell them they can play at our house or outside, but that's it. There have a been a few domestic disturbances as well in the middle of the night. Makes me so sad. And I haven't discussed specifics with my kids because I don;t want them to say anything to the kids or anyone else. I just tell them that I feel more comfortable if those kids come to our house, plus I am sure the kids are happy to get out of their house. They are clean, fed, go to school, etc. so there isn't anything to do or report, but just makes me really sad.

I work at a high school with 1500 students. The asst principal brings the kid down for me to do a "substance abuse report" aka a subjective assessment. Unless they stink, are acting really odd, or admit to it, there's no way to totally prove it. I actually don't mind when it happens at all. Just part of the job!

We had a kid bring an e-cig to school last year... haven't had any kids with weed yet. Just waiting for that though.

I mind it. A lot.

Weed isn't really the thing. The parents smoke weed.

The kids? Easy. They vape THC oil in their smokeless vapes. No smell, except maybe Cotton Candy or Unicorn Farts, or whatever odor they choose.

THC oil is the part of pot that gets you high. Cannabis is what is used for medical MJ. What these kids are "smoking" right under our nose is 80% stronger than the joints their parents are smoking.

And of course, pot is no longer a drug.:sarcastic:

They buy it online. With Bit Coins.

No drug dealer needed. Its delivered to the door.

"Johnny, a package came for you!"

"Yea, I needed a new charger for my phone."

it is as easy as that.

I am personally for the legalization of MJ. I don't think it has the healing properties assigned to it, but of course, much more research is needed. Maybe if they truly extrapolate the cannabis from the whole of it? Who knows.

But not for kids. Their brains are still developing.

Oh yes. I do mind. A lot.

Oh yeah, I 100% agree with you.

I mean really? "Gee, I'll bring my e-cig to class today and smoke weed, no one will know, it's perfectly okay to use a e-cig in school and I'm only in 8th grade! No one will care!"

I mean, at home, I don't care. Do whatever the hell you want in the privacy of your own home, I am not your mother, so I can't do anything about it and I'm pretty sure any type of lecture isn't going to stop them anyway.

But at my school? The only thing you should do is pretend you are a pure, innocent child like the day you came out of your mother. Outside of school, that's their parents responsibilities.

I mind a lot, and if I hear another kid bringing something in that nature again in my school, I'm going to petition we do a no drug campaign in my school.

Even though we found out the e-cig was her brother's and the box was store bought, I can't tell you if it was THC or not, who knows. But we put a stop on her and her little friends after we caught on.

I got my Narcan recert and my new bag of Narcan today.

I never had to use the last one, I hope I don't have to use this one, either.

Remeber my reservations?

I've learned so much.

Interesting point is that HEALTHCARE workers, like, School Nurses, were NOT covered to administer Narcan without an order until 2014. Where lay people could years before, under the Good Sam Act.

Far, I'm still on the fence about carrying Narcan at my school. I know I shouldn't be, but I am. As is my school physician and that is why we currently don't have an order. Fire station around the block carries and can make to our building in 2-3 minutes.

Then again, I just finally got standing orders for Epi this year. Baby steps?

Please don't be. Please!

Go to your county website. The police or local FD may be offering the training through the DOH.

They will answer all your questions.

Oh, I've gone. My state is huge on narcan. It is required in every public school. I know we have to go there, I do. But also need the order to proceed. It may be happening this school year. I have a monthly meeting to schedule with my school physician soon.
