High contact sports and nursing?

Published

Hi all,

I was wondering what you all thought about the legal and/or ethical issues that may arise by being a part of a high contact sport when you are a nurse. If there is a high likelyhood that participants of the sport will be injured (possibly by you), how would you approach this? I am interested in joining a sport after I finish nursing school and have a life again, but I feel like as a nurse I would be limited in what would be acceptable.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I'm a nurse and I play roller derby, and I never gave it a second thought! Its an incredible way to relieve stress and tension, and stay fit, be a part of your community and so many other amazing things... I encourage you to go for it!

If anything, sometimes you will just have tp "pre-emptively" explain some bruises so that colegues and/or patients don't start to become concerned about your welfare lol! I have jokingly explained many times that no, I am not a victim of domestic violence - I play womens roller derby! (not that domestic violence is a joking matter - but you get what I am saying) ...

Derby girls have "morals" just like any other athelete.. we follow codes of conduct, we are considered role models to many, participate and give back to our communities, just like basketball players, footbal players, etc...

Good luck to the few of you who said you are thinking of it! Roller derby is an amazing sport and is growing in popularity at an incredible pace! You will become a part of an amazing sport, and so much more!!

Gotta relieve the stress, derby, running, basketball, or whatever...just don't wear the skates to work.

It's not immoral to play a sport...unless you hurt someone on purpose!

Personally I feel like whatever happens in the bedroom is up to them, but evidence of sexual activity is not professional. I feel like that's filed under the same thing as a hickey. Bruising/etc isn't really what the OP was asking about here, though - she wanted to know if it was ethical to be in a potential to harm someone inadvertently in an impact sport, so that is how it's different. So I don't think it's unethical to either participate in a sport or have a kinky sex life, but you should attempt to look professional for work. Collars and long-sleeve shirts can do wonders to cover up some particularly nasty bruises.

I would inquire about it if it continued to show up just because if it's enough to bruise visibly, I worry about the potential for domestic abuse going on and her covering it up.

:lol2: haha! The thought of her with a hickey cracks me up. I think hickeys Are nasty & unprofessional. The bruises I am referring to were not typical linear finger grabs & she didn't have any hickeys that I could see. But for all I know it Is domestic violence. I doubt it, but good thinking.

In the ten years I have worked with her I have not known her to be unprofessional/inappropriate/unacceptable. At first I thought she was joking about being a masochist/sadist (bit naïve on my part). And for all anyone knows, the bruises & scrapes could have been from playing roller derby or some other contact sport.

Anyway, that was not what I was getting at w OP. I am taking a swing at the image of nursing.

I'll try again: This nurse & her husband inflict physical harm upon each other for fun. Is she putting on a false appearance of virtue by being a trauma nurse & beating her husband on the side?

btw If I ever become a masochist I will take you up on the long sleeve and turtle neck advice. ;) cheers

My concern does not lie with work or getting hurt myself. My concern was in hurting someone else or being held liable is some way by participating in the sport. I am not too worried about getting hurt myself. If I had that attitude I wouldn't even consider such an activity. And as far as covering bruises, that's what concealer is for (which I've had enough practice on my husband since he is a professional during the day). I sure do appreciate everyones comments. My concerns are now at ease now that I realize so many other nurses do the same kind of sports too.

I like to ride quads and dirtbikes out on the dunes and its such an awesome stress relief for me. Roller derby is something I've always wanted to try also. My A & P professor was on a derby team and it sounded like a blast.

I am more conscientious now as a nurse of my surroundings/personal safety though as I am the breadwinner for my family so I'm not as crazy and carefree as I once was. We lost a fellow nurse and her spouse recently in a climbing accident on the Mtn and it was very disturbing to us all to lose such a bright talented professional :(
