well sorta. LOL.

I"ve been hired by Albany Medical Center and will start next week. But I cannot find any news on this forum about them.

Does anyone know about them? I took the offer because they are a Level I teaching hospital and I believe that's a terrific place to learn in.

Does anyone here know if that's true? Are they a good facility? Do they reward their RN's? Not paywise from what I"ve gathered, nor benefits. They are quite stingy in those areas.

Can anyone tell me if they welcome new grads or have happy/comfortable working atmospheres? Comfortable pt/nurse ratios?

Anything? There's a huge chasm of information here. Makes me wish I was moving to the NYC area since I read about it so often.

Can anyone help this new grad?

Thanks

Chloe

i have worked here for 6 months. i have learnt so much. i am quite profecient at blood transfusions. i do have to say alot use this place as a stepping ground. they hire alot of new grads in every department. so alot get the critical care training to take downstate.

Well thanks Hermance! That's a load off my mind since I worry when a facility says they hire all the time! (my last situation said the same thing to me and I was the 5th to leave there in the few 8-ish weeks I was on board!!)

Does your unit use electronic charting?

Do you find you are able to take your breaks? Get off the unit for awhile?

AMC is actually the only hospital in upstate that isn't unionized; how's that working for you?

Thanks again,

Chloe

Thanks Fran! Such a sweet welcome. I hope my unit makes me feel as wanted!!!!!

I'm so nervous about this profession. :sofahider

I welcome input, advice, encouragement, and all else anyone wants to volunteer here. :redpinkhe

this is a large hospital. they employ over 9,000 employees and are currently expanding. due to the size with the electronic stuff is still behind. they do scan meds. they do ask you stay on your unit a year before transferring to another unit but they did tell us in orientation that if it isn't working on that unit for you they rather you switch than quit. the union thing isnt a big deal. i do get breaks - i take them when i can but i also work overnights.

we have all been where you are in one way or another hon. so just ask, and guaranteed we will provide. there is a wealth of information here for you. and as a personal suggestion, if you havn't already done so, will you do the update to the platinum or even the green to the professional so you will be able to access all of the content?

many remain lurkers, or just don't want to pay for anything, but you are only cheating yourself if you choose to do that, because so many of us here are longtime members, and have seen the growth of this website; myself included.

it's worth every single penny, and know i am not making a sales pitch for allnurses. i am just telling you the truth, because i love honesty and truth. it's a part of what makes an upstanding nurse, and one that an organization or a workplace if it's the right one, and most of all your family proud to be affiliated with you. if you are caring, honest, truthful, and a love of learning, you can go very far in the nursing field. this webpage is an excellent place to start.

so good luck my friend, and happy hunting.:igtsyt::[anb]::lvan::yeahthat::whe!: as you can see, we have a lot of smileys you can use too. they do express how we are feeling much better than words sometimes. if you are wondering where i'm getting the extra ones, all you have to do is click on the smiley face on the top of your webpage and you will gain access to all of them. youtube is also here if you're interested, and many of us are.

Out of curiosity, Fran, what on earth prompted you to pitch Chloe to become a paying member?

Chloe, Albany isn't the only hospital in upstate NY that isn't union. Mine isn't.

There is such a bankruptcy of NY nurses that DON'T work in the city on this forum.

Where are you guys?

I sure would love to know more about the hospitals in upstate NY (of course, I'd like to know as much as possible about AMC! )

Specializes in Cardiac Care.

Welcome to upstate NY! I'm over at the western edge of the Finger Lakes.

The new job is excellent! No patients!

I know next to nothing about Albany - the AMC with which I'm familiar is Adirondack Medical enter in Lake Placid.

Don, where are you? Syracuse? I'm in Ticonderoga.

I'm in Elmira, just south of the southern edge of the Finger Lakes, and about 2 hours by car south of Syracuse. Almost on the PA border. I've never been to Ticonderoga!
