Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone else out there is on the waitlist for the HFCC Nursing Program and when you think you'll be called. I went on the waitlist back in December 07 and was told I'd more than likely be called for winter 09 but I've had other students tell me they were called sooner than anticipated.:anbd:
Patience and Persistance. I was on the wait list since March 07 and I because I knew that Fall letters go out in Feb/March I'd be a no go for the Fall 08 program. I went to the Nursing office and spoke with L and M who told me to expect a letter in early October for winter 08. Well October 15 rolled around and still--Nothing. I went back to find out what was going on and it was like I was someone else because they told me that I look good to go for the Fall 08 pgm.
I was like HELL to the NO am I waiting another semester {in my mind}. Well to keep myself busy and options open I transferred to Wayne State and guess what? I received a letter {3 weeks later} inviting me to join the HFCC program for Winter 08. I did postpone:stone but the point is be patient.
The reason I ended up getting a last minute letter was because soooo many {like 30-40} postponed or fell off from the Fall 07 pgm and they needed to fill the spots quickly. It happens all the time so just be ready. One of the registrars for nursing advised me how frustrating it is for them getting a class together because so many people bail out because of this or that reason.
No offense to anyone but I don't believe HFCC should invite students that still need to finish BIO 233/234 because 90 percent end up postponing which is just taking away time from people who are ready. I am a witness because when I received my letter... I had less than 3 weeks to get everything done CPR class, Vaccinations, Drug Screenings, purchase Uniforms etc all of which I did but I still postponed because I had decided I'd rather start in the fall because of the short notice and requirement to attend school in the spring and summer. It would've been great to graduate in May 09:D but I have a husband and 2 kids and it was worth it to me more to spend my summer with them.
So AGAIN be patient I know it is frustrating so much goes on to whittle that waiting list on down-- even to the Henry Ford Health System partnership with HFCC which I was accepted into so now my acceptance into the HFCC Fall 08 is being declined as well as 9 other students who were also accepted{only 10 slots available this time for HFCC students the other 50 are for HFHS employees} and again I'm sure students will postpone or have other things come up so keep busy if you've taken all your classes.
It doesn't hurt to take a Nutrition class or a Pathophysiology or Microbiology. Spend as much time as you have left with family friends and boyfriends enjoy life as you know it... I think it ends once Nursing School begins.
I'm on the waitlist and will have all of my classes completed as of summer semester 08. Then I'll just be waiting for the letter:lol2:. Can anyone tell me PLEASE what I can do while I'm waiting to make it easier on myself once I do receive the letter? I don't want to be rushing around at the last minute trying to figure everything out.
I know that basic life saving should be done last because it will expire but what about vaccinations and such????
I heard that some people take Medical Terminology even though it's not required. (I don't understand why it's not part of the program!!) I was thinking of taking it too because I don't know how else I'd learn all of the terms and shorthand!
I took Medical Terminology this semester, and I absoluetly loved it:redbeathe. I'm going for nursing and wanted to take this class, to get a background on all of the medical terms and abbrviations before I go into nursing. If you have want to take a class before getting into the nursing program. I would highly suggest it.
"Also, I received a letter from "Henry Ford Health System(HFHS) to enroll in the accelerated (16 months) program for this May, due to open spots. But if accepted you have to work 3 years for your tuition for them. I decline on that offer, because you have to have some money up front. Wish I didn't have a penny."
No you don't need any money up front. NADA. Other than the costs of your uniforms which you'd have to pay even if you went into the traditional pgm expect about 120 bucks. Not unless you're speaking of saving up your own personal money to have up front for yourself if that makes any sense. However money for the pgm YOU GIVE THEM 3 YEARS YOUR TUITION/BOOKS are paid.
ALSO... you don't have to be an employee. They are given first dibbs of course but I was never an employee and I was already enrolled for Fall 08 classes at HFCC. I was just like you all... on the waiting list... and now I start classes Monday 5/5:w00t:.

Okay you ready?
-Hepatitis B shot or sign refusal form. {sign refusal if you have not completed the series} ask Nursing office about the refusal form and where to obtain as my Dr. office did not have them
-Tetorifice
-Rubella, Mumps, Rubeola, and Varicella titers Have blood drawn before getting MMR shot. Having the illness does not prove immunity.
-MMR and Repeat Titers if necessary
-T.B skin Test/Chest X-ray
-Free from contagious disease form filled out
-Environmental Conditions form filled out
-Physical Form {Required Performance Standards} filled out, signed and printed name of physician address and phone number filled out.
-Hepatitis Acknowledgement Form signed and dated
-Release of Health Form signed and dated
-Changes in Health form signed and dated
-Release waiver and indemnification statement signed and dated also witnessed by two persons {not in the nursing office}
-Proof of Health insurance
-BLS-C certification
-Drivers license and license plate number
Original cards must be seen of the aforementioned not xerox copies.
Nursing office will not make any copies of health form so if you want a copy, xerox them yourself before submitting.
You will also need a 10-panel drug sceening {urinalysis}
All of these forms indicated above will be given to you during orientation however you can make a judgement about what you would feel comfortable having done for now.
BLS-C you may take at the school, I went to Superior Medical Education in Ferndale. It was 50 dollars for like 4 hours and you receive certification for 2 years. 248.543.1230
First year books if you are not working with financial aid, grants or scholarships are told to us to run approx 1000 {yes one thousand dollars} just a heads up.
Also...
I was told that we may go through our family physicians to have physicals and titers and vaccinations done but that we must go through Midwest Health center for the 10 panel drug screening NO EXCEPTIONS.
Midwest Health Center
5050 Schaefer Rd.
313.581.2600
Word to the wise... these titers and vaccinations can get pretty expensive so if you decide to go through your family physician to have this done for the sake of insurance... CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE CARRIER FIRST to find out if they will cover these elective well visits.
I learned a pretty expensive lesson 900 bucks worth. Yes this is what the Titers and Vaccination oh yes and the urinalysis {which HFCC wouldn't accept anyhow} costed my husband when the insurance company kicked it alllllll back. Called myself saving us some money because all of this was not even 2 weeks before christmas.:angryfire
Midwestern Health Price list:
Titers $90 dollars for all 5 tests
Vaccinations : MMR $60: Varicella $60: Hep-B $60 each {there is a series of 3 so $180}: Tetorifice Toxoid $30 and TB $10 per test.
In order to receive The prices above {exclusive to HFCC} you must bring the forms given to you by the Nursing Dept. If you're on the list maybe you could ask for one up front.:wink2:
Hope this helps you and anyone else who was just wondering.

so even if i don't have the required qualifications i can still apply for a position?
i guess it doesn't hurt... i just thought that if they listed stuff like knowledge of software, 1+yr experience in a medical setting, etc that i would have to have those qualifications... i assume if they say you need to be certified in say, medical assisting or nurses aide that i shouldn't bother, right? :heartbeat
