Hey that's MY patient!

Published

Specializes in Cardiology, Oncology, Medsurge.

So yesterday I'm to be receiving a patient from ED.

I call and ask to get report and am told they will call me back.

Never return my call, so I follow up and hear the secretary tell me...

Sandy on another floor is getting report for My patient???

I tell her I am to receive this patient, not Sandy!!! You know this is true you had me call back, silly!

I call back to talk to the ED shift leader and she tells me they knew where this patient was to go two hours ago.

I tell her she is not telling me the truth, I KNOW better! She asks for my name, silly creature she is!!!

Bottom line: So another floor swindled our floor out of a patient, too much! What has the world come to!

Senses has been low, but this is a low blow!!!

Specializes in ED, ICU, PSYCH, PP, CEN.

This is a historic first. Census is really low.

Usually you can't give a patient away

I'm sorry, you are upset you didn't get an admission??

Specializes in Peds Hem, Onc, Med/Surg.

:lol2::lol2::lol2: I can just hear someone in a whiny voice, "BUT THAT'S MY PATIENT!"

And then I can hear my manager say. "No that patient belongs to everyone. We are a TEAM!" LOL ( because obviously to her everything has to do with teamwork)

But it was a little unfair that they had you expecting someone and then they don't show up. But on the other hand less work for you.

Specializes in Cardiac, Hospice, Float pool, Med/Peds.

Actually, not really...BUT

Admissions equal work

When there is no work there is no pay!!!

And when we are called off the pay we receive is taken out of our vacation money

Specializes in Psych, Med/Surg, LTC.

I would be ticked, too. I dreaded the calls that would come when census was low... We took turns staying home, but still... If you are a part-time worker and only get 2-3 vacation days a year, you want them when you want them... Having to take them for low census means you get no time off for a vacation. It means no pay for a per-diem worker... The hospital I used to work for always had low cencus in summer... It was nice to get an easy assignment, but sucked to get called off on a Tuesday in the middle of your other shifts. You can't really go anywhere or do anything, then.

Specializes in paediatric and trauma.

Yeah but if she was expecting an admission then didn't get it it's wasting their time really

I get nurses asking for admits every time the census gets a little low. No one can take ours though were in the NICU and nobody else wants them.

Specializes in PICU.

Actually, I work in a PICU and when census is low in the NICU, sometimes they'll take a patient that was supposed to come to us. Bit them in the butt recently when the kid ended up being RSV +. ;)

Oh, OK. Things like "low census" and "over staffed" are foreign to me. :D

Specializes in cardiac.

Never heard anyone complain about not getting an admission, ever. Even when there's low census.
