Hesi test at Macomb

hi, i was wondering how the adminssions works for the RN program there at macomb. i took some classes there last year, and heard that it was competitive, there is no wait list, but even students scoring high on the HESI, w/ a 3.9 gpa were still not getting accepted. do you know anything about this, or any other schools. i am currently trying to apply to all the schools in my area, so far- it is pretty difficult, with long waits or real competitiveness. however, i have a good chance to start at OCC in the fall of 07, do you think this is crazy? too long of a wait, or etc.?

Well, the way it works at Macomb is they factor 50% of your GPA for the last 12 credit hours; however, if that spreads out over 2 semesters they take all the credit hours during that time. Also they take 50% of your HESI score. They take the top 125 people. It is very competative because there is usually about 700 applicants. If you can get in at OCC in fall of '07 that would be great! I checked into Baker but quickly ruled it out. Good luck!

i am a nursing student at macomb and i know first hand how competitive it is there, however, it is not true that people who have a 3.9 and do well on the hesi do not get accepted actually, one of my best girlfriends got accepted and she had a 3.5 gpa and got a 93% on the hesi.....

macomb also just started an accelerated program that will go through the summer months and will graduate 30 additional students in 15 months. so that will help out with pulling more students in to the program!

I just wanted to agree with the previous poster. I am also a nursing student at Macomb and I know a few people who had high HESI scores and okay GPAs and got in, as well as the other way around. As far as the HESI goes, it is not that bad. Don't waste your money on the study guide, the learning center has copies you can look at if you feel you need to, which is probably a good idea. It is a waste of money because it reviews a lot of science, and Macomb doesn't test you on the science portion. The math is also pretty basic - don't worry much about algebra. If I remember correctly, know how to multiply, divide, add and subtract fractions, know conversions (like ounces to cups...). I don't remember there being a whole lot of algebra on it. If you look through the study guide it will tell you what you need to know. The learning centers at both center and south campus have the study guides, so if you can't get one at center try south. As far as the new accelerated program, you do not have to have a bachelors. The only difference is that you attend school through the summer, instead of having summers off like with the regular program. They already have their first accelerated class set to go, but I don't know how often they are accepting students into that.

The Hesi test was really not that bad... As one of the posts said, the math portion is mostly fractions, decimals, conversions, etc. Honestly, I didn't study that much and did fairly well... Good Luck!

I am starting the accelerated program tomorrow We were told at our orientation they will not be starting another accelerated program until we are through (most likely to see how well we do with plowing through with out the SS semesters off) The other difference is we are only attending classes Thurs-Sun and evening hours. (Works out MUCH better for me, which was why I jumped in that cohort)

It's a lot of work. Be prepared to do nothing but read and write papers for the first 8 weeks. Study hard and you'll do fine. If you want, you can PM me and I'll try to give you some help specific to the classes.

I'm also in the Macomb program. I had a 4.0 and still started with the second group (October 2005), so it's very competitive. I'm really surprised someone got in with a 3.5 since everyone in my class seemed to have 4.0s. I had to do a stopout d/t a divorce, but just got back in this month. Really happy about that!

I wish they would have had the option of going year round when I started..I would have been done already.

My lecture teacher just told us today that of the last class that took the HESI, only about 11 people passed. The faculty was very surprised at this, since Macomb's NCLEX pass rate is 100%. She told us to review electrolytes and respiratory; these were the sections that are currently giving students the most problems. Although they don't say you have to study for it, we inferred they would like people do some review.

Not sure what teacher was telling you that info. I graduated class of Dec 2005 - my entire class was a 4.0 going into the program and basically everyone passed the exit HESI (I don't think anyone studied...we were too stressed and "burned out"!!)

FYI-from those in my class who I have spoken to, most people passed the NCLEX at 75 questions. The ones that I heard did not pass had some issues in their personal lives which I assume interfered with study time, etc.

NCLEX questions were MAINLY leadership/management and prioritizing patient care (ex: you are the charge nurse what pts will you assign to this new RN? or: your pts are XX, YY, and ZZ who will you assess FIRST)

Good luck - Macomb has an awesome program and it really prepared me for the "real world" of nursing. I am finishing my RN orientation at the end of this month....YAY!

Good to hear from you! Sounds like everything is going well for you. Just restarted myself..went through a divorce so I'm at psych now. So I won't be done now until May of next year. :angryfire

My teacher was referring to the midway HESI, not the exit one. We'll be taking that one at the end of these 8 weeks.

Where are you working now? I'm still unsure of which hospital I want to work at here..may end up moving out of state after I'm done.
