Helpful Tips for the Nurse Traveler

Hey there all, I just wanted to post a general thread about the basics of travel nursing for all those people who want to consider it. I know I asked a lot of questions when I was considering traveling and I see that a lot of others are too - I think this thread will be helpful to all those who might want to consider travel nursing full time.

First, if you are interesting in travel nursing, why are you considering it?? What reasons are the most important to you?? For me, I want to see the country and have some adventures. Pay is not as important to me, but it is still important. Having figured out what you want out of travel nursing, you can begin to interview companies to see which one can best give you what you want. There are A LOT of companies out there, just see some of the other posts here asking for information on them!!

Once you decide on a company, you will (of course) have a lot of paperwork to fill out before you get to your first assignment. In deciding on a company, be sure to evaluate the recruiter you are assigned to - they can make or break your experience with this company, and you will be working with them closely to determine which assignments will be best for you... Make sure that your recruiter is someone that you want to work with.

After you get all the paperwork filled out, your recruiter will submit a packet with your information to several hospitals in the area that you want to work in. You will have to interview with the managers of the individual units to determine if you are a good fit for their unit, and if they are a good fit for your previous work experience. The hospital will probably give you a week of orientation, although this varies from hospital to hospital. Since you will be expected to hit the floor running, they expect you to know what you are doing before you ever get there.

Does that mean that I cannot ask for an agency reference? I'm considering becoming a travel nurse and want to find out which agencies have the most contacts/jobs in New York City. I'm trying to figure out where to begin. Thanks.

Saying "I've gone with XYZ Company and liked it", or "I've heard that ABC has job openings in NYC" is one thing.

Saying "my recruiter's name is John Doe with XYZ company" is different. This is to keep in line w/ our site's Terms of Service that don't allow for solicitation, as we have had recruiters post here in an underhanded way in order to drum up business for themselves.

I Have been traveling for a year. Before I started I was also terrified but it is one of the best choices I have ever made. I travel with my Husband and our 11 and 12 year old children. My husband happens to be in school right now so he does not work and thanks to modern times he has been able to take all of his classes online. My children are also home schooled for the last two years. I don't know how long this will work but it is working for us right now and I absolutely love it.

Been reading some posts about travel agencies/hospitals cancelling nurses due to bogus allegations of "clinical errors" just to save money, etc. Does this really happen? What can you do to prevent it? I really want to travel but don't want to be cancelled because I forgot to chart a bowel movement on a flow sheet. Please share your experiences. Any advice/insight would be greatly appreciated! :(

Does anyone know what is the average beginner travel nurse salary? I talked to an agency and they told me $18/ hr for GA and I make more than that here in memphis. What range should I look for?

Thanks

$18/hr was the TOTAL compensation? No tax-free portion? Are you an RN? I have never even heard of an RN making $18/hr as a traveler or agency. It should be A LOT more than that. Give more details and we can try and help you better.

I read somewhere about a website where travelers can post reviews of their employers. However I've been scouring the web and can only find the UltimateNurse site reviews. I know there's another site that probably has more info - anyone know it? THANKS!

www.travelnursingcentral.com

It's not a message board, but they have reviews of hospitals as well as agencies. Reviews are by travelers.

Hello all. I have a question about travel nursing with kids. Is it possible even during the school year? The idea I had going was, say I took an assignment in LA and their long assinments like 3 months at a time, brought my kids with me, enrolled them in school and before my assignment was up apply for the next one in the same area and keep doing this until the end of the school year. Could this be possible? Advice much appreciated.

Hi everyone

I am an LPN and have been traveling for 2 years. I was fortunate with my first assignment in Alaska at the VA Primary Care Clinic. I did 9 months there and then I ended up at my taxed based home for 4 months before getting another assignment in my home state in corrections which I am getting ready to complete my second contract. I have already started networking a month in advance because the state is getting rid of all travelers due to the economy. Some advice for travelers SAVE! SAVE! SAVE! As a traveler you never know when the contract can end for you. Be organized, have a wireless laptop, keep crendentials, immunizations, licensure up to date including a yearly physical. Traveling is fun, I am married and my children are all grown but you miss a lot being away so much. But learn to enjoy every minnute when you are away. Buy a GPS for your car. Stay strong LPNs

thank you to all of you for all of your information. I graduate nursing school in December and am very interesting in travel nursing after i get comfortable in my field. thank you agian for your info :)
