46 is absolutely NOT too old to go to nursing school. I just graduated a few weeks ago. I am 25 but more than half of the 90 people who graduated were over 35. The oldest person in my class was 58. If nursing is what you want to do, than do it! :) Nursing school is tough no matter what your age, but you meet wonderful friends who you will study with. Go for it!

I live in tampa and interviewed at a few hospitals. As of December 2009. For a new nurse out of school. UCH offers 20/hr. TGH 21.50/hr and St. joseph's 22.35/hr. I don't know about any of the hospitals in St. Pete or Clearwater. Hope this helps some people :)

Dont worry about reading for the first semester. Alot of the things that you learn at the beginning of the 1st semester are pretty much common sense. A couple weeks into the semester it will be more important to read. I would look over more of the first couple chapters of the math book. Conversions, how to read labels, and the basic nursing math formulas.

Hey... i am graduating from the HCC program in dec of 09. Congratulations on starting the program. The program does NOT offer summer classes. You only go spring/fall fall/spring. The LPN transition program has summer classes but they do not have enough teachers to teach both programs throughout the year. i hope you have a great time. You will def need the Perry and Potter and Lewis book. YOu will need a drug guide and the Nursing diagnosis book. YOu really dont' need to buy the Lab test book though. I am graduating from the HCC program in a few weeks. It is best to send everything as one packet. This is the best way to ensure that nothing gets lost. In fact, anything you turn into this program make sure you make a copy of because they WILL lose things. This school bases entrance solely on GPA. Basically, if 500 people apply and there are only 130 spots, they put everyone in order of GPA highest to lowest and start at the top and count down 130 spaces. Then they choose a certain number of alternates. There are a lot of rumors that nobody gets in on the first time applying. That is bogus and not true. I was accepted the first time and so were 75 or so other people. The lowest GPA they accepted for my term 3.14. So believe me it is possible, and there is hope. I would say that when you do apply depending on where you live or course, i would recommend the Dale Mabry campus. I attended the Plant city campus and it was a horrible experience. we always got stuck with brand new teachers, and the nursing lab at plant city is pathetic. The dale mabry campus is allotted way more money. So anyways, like every program, HCC has it's problems. In the end, you are going to finish, and you will be a nurse!!! no worries :) I hope this helps you.
