I am a first-year nursing student and have been given an assignement in my pharmacology class. I have to come up with 3 drugs; a new drug, one that has been taken off the market, and one that was originally made for one use and is now used for something else. Some of the recent drugs given by fellow students for the last category were Rogaine and Viagra, which were originally made for heart problems and are now being used for hair regrowth and impotence. I am having the hardest time finding a drug for that last category. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, as I need to do mine ASAP and only have 2 more weeks left in the semester. Thanks!!

If I get this right, you are now needing a med that has been taken off the market? If so, Google is you friend here. I can think of 8-10 drugs that have recently been taken off the market.

The way I'm reading it, you're looking for a drug that was intended for one purpose initially but used for another purpose now.
When you have a drug that is approved to treat one condition, using that drug to treat a different condition is known as off-label use. Sometimes drugs are used off-label for long periods of time before official, formal approval occurs for the second purpose.
If you add the word off-label to your search, I bet you will easily come up with several drugs that have more than one indication.

There's big controversy about Cytotec (drug for stomach ulcers) being used off-label to induce labor even though the manufacturer has issued a warning AGAINST using it in pregnancy. Women have died from uterine rupture. That might be and interesting one to use.

How about coumadin? It was originally marketed and used in rat poison before humans started using it.
