Hello out there!
I'm new to this site and I start my first semester of nursing school in three weeks. Please give me any advice you may have. Is there anything I can do to jump start myself?

Hi and welcome to all nurses! First of all I can't exactly say what you can do to jump start yourself since I don't start until March. But I did come here to say GOOD LUCK. Also I have heard some people on this forum say not to overwhelm yourself yet. Take these 3 weeks you have left and just relax. And if you really want to start looking at stuff, maybe look over your anatomy as a refresher (if you have already had it) you will def. need to know it.

Get caught up on sleep, exercise, start meal planning (seriously..when you are busy it is so easy to eat too much junk food which leads to excess weight..there are many forums on here related to this topic), if you have a list of books you need for your classes you might just want to scan through them..just to get an idea of what you will be covering! but don't freak out if you don't know any of it..you aren't suppossed to! and take time to relax! don't worry, everyone was a beginner..you won't be expected to know it all. good luck :)

I start in two weeks and here is what I've been doing/will do.
1. Read the intro/first chapter in each of my textbooks
2. Getting a message
3. Stocking up on school supplies and snacks to keep in my car
4. Getting my house in order
5. Reading what may be my last novel for awhile
6. Turning 40 and having an enormous party (2 days before school starts)
7. Taking the pre-test in my dosage calculations book and will review what I miss
8. Got my study in order and nicely decorated so it will be easy to "want" to spend time in there
9. Preparing my family for picking up the slack
10. Getting my haircut and styled in an easy to fix style
I'm mostly relaxing with a few moments of preparation thrown in.
Thanks for all of your responses! I'm in the process of some of your recommendations and I thank you for all the ones that I didn't think of.

I have orientation on the 14th and then we jump right in on the 20th of this month. This will be my first semester as a "real" nursing student. I have been reading my text books, although I admit that pharmacology isn't making much sense right now. I've been cleaning my house and getting organized. This has happened everyday over the last 3 months! I have a big house that used to have lots of stuff in it. Thankfully, I only have a little more to go before I am organized! I also set up my office with a comfortable place to sit, computer desk, papers filed away, etc. That way I will also want to spend some time in here. I've been spending time with my 3 year old and two doggies. I've been doing a little meal planning and have also bought myself some items to carry in my bag so I don't spend money at the vending machines on junk. Other than that, I've been getting my fill at allnurses.com! Good luck on your upcoming semester!
My orientation is on the 20th and then I start Feb. 1st. I have a seven year old that I am trying to spend time with right now. I also have two dogs (1 choc. and 1 yellow lab) that require a ton of attention and of course my husband. I think next weekend we'll purchase a freezer to stock up on frozen foods from Sam's Club or CostCo. They have a good selection of dinner starters that are also pretty healthy.

I am a fan of costco! I'm also very concerned about my eating habits once school starts. Sooo.... I just bought the large package of mixed greens to make salads from throughout the week, a big package of fresh salmon, which I've cut up, wrapped, and stuck in the freezer so all I have to do is pull out and defrost. Also stocked up on granola bars and almonds for quick snacks on the run.
I too cleaned up the spare room we use as an office, bought a brand new desk, and worked on creating my own "work space." (my bf already uses it as his work from home office)
See if you can get a copy of the first week's schedule to start your reading. Infection prevention and control seems to be a popular chapter to start on among many schools in our area. (central florida)
