Help I've been a nurse for 10 years

Published

I have been an RN for 10 years. I started out on the Medical/Oncology floor. Transferred to Maternity as a scrub nurse for C-sections. Had fertility issues and had a hard time working with Moms and newborns. I left the hospital to work for a HH agency basically to have an 8-5 M-F position to have more time with my Husband and did infertility treatments which were not successful so I was really depressed at that time. The HH was not my cup of tea management was horrible. I left and took a position at a LTC facility and decided to adopt a baby. I have been at LTC facility for about 5 years now and I'm board feel stagnate and I really want to go back and work at the hospital. I have applied for several positions but my resume is not great haven't even be called for an interview.

I feel like I haven't accomplished anything in the last 10 years in my nursing Career. I think my resume would look better if I were a new grad!!! I feel like my spending half of my career in LTC and HH has really hurt my chances of obtaining a hospital position. Any advice on how to be more appealing to hospital? Please help!

I don't know how your resume is set up, but could you divide it into healthcare experience and "other" work? It makes it look like you have a lot of experience. If you have done LTC, then you probably have good time management, assessment, and other hands on skills. Point that out, if it is true. Do you have certifications or belong to organizations? Did you see problems needing to be fixed and tried to fix the issues? Were you a mentor?

Why not look into outpatient clinics, or doctors offices, turn some of that personal infertiity experience into a positive- check out the infertilty clinics coaching other couples, or check out WIC programs teaching the moms nurtition and baby care.
