HELP! Is nursing really for me ??

Published

Hi I am a 19 year old pre-nursing student who was just accepted into nursing school at UNC-Greensboro but the problem is that right now i feel so terribly discouraged about nursing. I always get so nervous in my nursing lab when my lab instructors watch me do the application of the nursing skills... that i feel like that they must think that i'm a complete idiot. I feel like i completely lack the confidence to be a great nurse so is nursing for me than ?? I did work really really hard these past two years of college but am scared that i will turn out to be a complete nursing failure. Any advice would help. Thanks so much!

Hello, first let me say that I am on this site to learn and absorb as much info as I can from a nurses perspective...because I am very seriously considering going to nursing school. I want to encourage you that if you chose nursing it was because you love to serve others, you had/have the confidence and desire to make this happen for yourself. I believe that your nervousness is completely normal. It is like mind over matter- you need to prepare yourself to before your lab and tell yourself to expect nervousness, just be confident that you are not going to give up until you feel that you have done the job correctly. Those doctors were once in your shoes. All of us have someone over us, watching and observing, that is how we learn!! I believe in you. Good luck.

I started out like you and hated people watching me do things and as time went on, I began to realize that it was time to get over this and learn that it is good people are watching me so that I could become a safe, knowledgeable nurse. No one likes being put on the spot but that is how you learn. Make sure you pick the instructor who is the meanest and the pickiest so you don't get away with anything.

Let me first start out by saying congratulation on being accepted into nursing school.:yeah:

That being said, try not be so hard on yourself. We all feel that way to some extent when we first start out. I just finished my lab check offs for this quarter and I can tell you that I shook like a leaf that whole time in front of the instructors. They know that being checked off for a procedure can be extremely nerve racking. Confidence will come with time.

Getting into nursing school is a highly competitive process, there are always more applications then there is available spots so that should tell you that they have confidence that you will succeed in the program and that they don't think your a complete idiot if they accepted you into their program.

Take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy your accomplishment!! :D

I'm starting into my 3rd quarter of nursing school and still get nervous for check-offs. I really wouldn't let it get to you. I think the nervousness is a good thing it shows you want to do really good, which you will probably practice more for check-offs. Instructors are always going to be hard on you because they want to see you succeed and make sure you know your stuff. It does get a little bit easier though once you get to know your instructors well. If your dream is to be a nurse don't let anything stand in your way, it's a feeling that everyone in nursing school has felt at one point or another.
