Hi!
I am a registered nurse from the Philippines. I will be travelling to UK as a student come 3rd week of March. I have been enrolled to study NVQ 2 or 3 for 2 years and earn 5.52 pounds per hour. I will be working 40 hours a week as my study time is paid. My accomodation is subsidized at 65 pounds a week this amount includes my heating, electricity, water and local council tax. I will be placed 5 miles from Nottingham city at a borough. I will work at a home.
Given the timeline in the processing of immigrant visa to the US, I deem this a great alternative, this way I can earn and learn while I wait. I have a less than a year experience so this limits my choices.
MY question is::typing
1. How can I apply for ONP?
2. How many years of experience does the NMC require before I can file my application and be approved?
3. How long does it take NMC to process applications of non EU or EEU members?
4. Can I change visa status, from student to working?
Thanks:heartbeat.
The facts that I presented are base on the expenses of my mom's students whom she have sent to the UK. The nurses are very happy there; no complaints as of this writing.
Students are exempt from the council tax BUT they pay 18% income tax.
I am NOT claiming that this certificate will qualify one to be a nurse. Definitely NOT. BUT, while waiting for opportunites to work as a NURSE in the future, why not take this NVQ, the work of which is still related to healthcare; earn a certificate, PLUS a bonus of a salary that only TOP EXECUTIVES earn here in the Philippines. (not even middle level executives earn that much here in the Philippines).
Believe me, the living cost that I presented more than cover one's expenses- more than enough spare to send to their families back home. A 3 bedroom flat in Worcestershire cost UKP613 inclusive of water, electric bills. There are 3 students who share the flat. That is the truth because my 1st cousin is one of those who stays in that flat.
They receive a Gross salary of GBP11,500 a year or a net of GBP9,430 (18% tax) annual. With the enterprising nature of Filipinos, they can earn more (offering massage service after work, perhaps???or haircut?)?
I know that it is very hard and un-acceptable for many who does not know life in the Philippines to understand why Filipino nurses accepts jobs "below" what nurses are trained for. Many parents of these nursing graduates had to mortgage their properties just to send their children to nursing schools hoping that once their children graduates, they will have a better life.
I don't want to argue here why Philippines continue to produce many nurses; blaming the government for such; etc. The reason of my writing in this thread is to let FILIPINO NURSES know that there is a better opportunity out there for you as compared to seating in front of the computer from 8pm till the wee hour of the morning earning PHP25,000 (USD556) a month,in a call center.
Hope somehow, I'm able to give light to dilemma of FILIPINO nurses reading this thread.
you're right i understand you...time flies so fast rather than sitting down and waiting for the job to come gotta do something even though its not your line of work what's important is that you did'nt steal, you worked hard for it and someday your time will that youcan practice your profession.
And it does not matter if one goes to the UK for this program, the final issue is that they cannot remain there to work as an RN when they are done. The UK is under a hiring freeze and it is impossible to even get licensed there as a new grad.
And the next thing to consider is that if one already holds the BSN, why in the world would you need to complete a program like this in a country where you will never be able to get a visa to work there in the first place? And for a few years no less? The only one getting any benefit whatsoever is the owner of the program.
It makes no difference if one is sent there or not, but the issue is that they cannot do a thing with it when they are done and it does not count as having RN experience so the nurse is back to square one. This program does not make it easier to get a job in another country either. It is no special certification at all, just something to try to make someone pay ridiculous fees for nothing.
And for wasting three years, then that takes from having experience as an RN so actually makes it harder to get a job in another country as an RN. To send a student or nurse over for a program like this is actually shameful if you ask me. They are not going to work as nurses and are nothing more than care-givers at best. Nothing that I would be proud of, and one is not working in the role of the nurse but as a care-giver.
They are purely being taken advantage of and nothing more than that.
Save your money.
I know there are many in these forums who looks at working below a "BSN" kinda "off" but being a resident of the Philippines, seeing and witnissing the plight of Filipino nursing graduates... I empathize and fully understand their situation. But those who are not here in the Philippines, living in a developed countries, will see things differently.NVQ in Health & Social Care in the UK gives Filipino nursing graduates a chance to gain a certificate that is recognized worldwide. The expereince they will gain and the skills they will learn far outweighs what yhey will earn while working in a call center here in the Philippines. YES, people out there in other countries, for your information . Filipino nursing graduates lot here in the Philippines is employed in call centers. Many more are uemployed because there is not enough hospitals to accept them even as volunteers.
Silverdragon, you and you alone can decide your fate. I know of MANY NURSES who are now in the UK under the NVQ program. They are happy and earn more than PHP91,000/month. Take a look at the table below of the expected earning and expenses.
Income over two years
Year 1 Year 2
Total Income over two years
Gross annual income £11,500.00 £11,500.00 £23,000.00*
Approximate Net annual income after 18% tax deductions £9430.00 £9430.00 £18,860.00
• The year two net income maybe liable to a slight increase as the student maybe promoted to a senior position or be given additional responsibilities (at the placement providers discretion).
Expenses over two
Expense Items Monthly amount Annual Total
Two Year Total
Accommodation £250.00 £3000.00 £6000.00
Council tax £0.00 £0.00 £0.00
Bills £40.00 £480.00 £960.00
Food £80.00 £960.00 £1920.00
Travel Costs £20.00 £240.00 £480.00
Miscellaneous costs £20.00 £240.00 £480.00
Total Expenses £410.00 £4920.00 £9,840.00
*The programme supports students by assuring that there are at least 2 students in a given placement provider. This helps the students in settling in to their new surroundings; supporting each other in their learning and increases the possibility of making further living cost savings throughout the course (shared heating and electric bills etc).
• Student monthly living costs will vary slightly depending on the area and their own living standard
• The Academy will source accommodation in close proximity to each of our placement providers.)
Sorry, but one does not need this certification to get a job as an RN in other countries and that is where you are very mistaken about. Three years and not working as an RN will actually make it harder to get a job in other countries.
And the UK has a hiring freeze in place and even those that were there as working RNs and for four to five years did not get their visas renewed.
This program actually needs to be reported to the immigration authorities in the UK for doing something and making promises that they cannot keep.
Because of same, this thread is being closed. All from the UK have chimed in on this program and yet it still continues to be discussed. But it is not an acceptable way to do things as we have been stating all along. and can only cause more problems for those that go thru it.
Those salaries that are listed above are essentially at poverty level as well if you figure in the costs of living in the UK. And their is no money listed there for clothing, the winters there can be very cold and winter clothes are required and quite expensive. And if this program was so wonderful, why are there not others from other countries posting about it? It just does not make any sense at all.
And one cannot work a 40 hour week and get paid for their training as was mentioned above legally, that is in violation of the student visa that was issued. And this again shows that this program is being operated illegally.
And these nurses are not working as nurses in the UK, they are there working as maids and nothing more than that.

The NVQ in health and social care is a recognised certificate (and I use certificate rather than qualfication deliberately) that is a competency based training for NON-QUALIFIED personnell. It does not train you to become a nurse, it will not help you work as a qualified nurse either in the UK or any other country because it is not a nursing qualification. Also it is a national certificate which means it is specific to the UK, i really don't know how you think this will be recognised worldwide.
you are going to seriously struggle to survive on this amount of money in the UK, the cost of living here means that you will be earning about £785 each month after tax.I would question your expenses as well, I think that unless you are looking at a rural area then your rent is going to be between £300 - 350 a month. You will have to pay COUNCIL TAX, this will be between £100 - 150 each month. Electricity, water and gas are going to cost more than £40 and I think you will find your food bill will be more as well. The cost of foodstuffs has increase substantially within the past few months and looks as if it is continuing to do so.
